Abstract

An antenna array is provided that includes a plurality of radiating elements and one or more combiners. The plurality of radiating elements and the combiners are formed as a single indivisible metal element by use of additive manufacturing processes.

Claims (45)

1. An antenna device, comprising:

a plurality of dual polarized radiating elements; and

a combiner network comprising two or more combiners that each combine electromagnetic signals in a waveguide cavity;

wherein the combiner network combines electromagnetic energy from the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements into a single first port for a first polarization and a single second port for a second polarization; and

wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements and the combiner network are manufactured together as a single metal element by a three-dimensional printing process such that manufacturing the single metal element does not require a separate joining process for joining separate components.

2. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises a septum polarizer formed integrally with each one of the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements.

3. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises one or more impedance steps.

4. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises a first waveguide port and a second waveguide port.

5. The antenna device of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements is connected to at least one combiner of the combiner network by way of the first waveguide port or the second waveguide port.

6. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises at least four radiating elements that are each connected to the combiner network by a waveguide.

The antenna device of claim 6 , wherein each of the four radiating elements is connected to the combiner network by one waveguide of four waveguides, and wherein the combiner network combines the four waveguides connected to each of the four radiating elements into a single waveguide for the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements.

8. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of at least one of the two or more combiners comprises a U-bend waveguide.

9. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements each comprise a first waveguide port supporting Left Hand Circular Polarized (LHCP) polarization.

10. The antenna device of claim 9 , wherein the first waveguide ports of the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements are combined by one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network.

11. The antenna device of claim 10 , wherein a second plurality of dual polarized radiating elements include a first waveguide port supporting LHCP polarization.

12. The antenna device of claim 11 , wherein the first waveguide ports in the second plurality of dual polarized radiating elements are combined by one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network.

13. The antenna device of claim 12 , wherein one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network combines:

the combiner associated with the first waveguide ports in the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements; and

the combiner associated with the first waveguide ports in the second plurality of dual polarized radiating elements.

14. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements each comprises a second waveguide port supporting Right Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP) polarization.

15. The antenna device of claim 14 , wherein the second waveguide ports of the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements are combined by one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network.

16. The antenna device of claim 15 , wherein a second plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises a second waveguide port supporting RHCP polarization.

17. The antenna device of claim 16 , wherein the second waveguide ports in the second plurality of dual polarized radiating elements are combined by one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network.

18. The antenna device of claim 17 , wherein one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network combines:

the combiner associated with the second waveguide ports in the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements; and

the combiner associated with the second waveguide ports in the second plurality of dual polarized radiating elements.

19. The antenna device of claim 1 , further comprising a waveguide monopulse formed together as a component of the single metal element that further comprises the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements and the combiner network.

20. The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the waveguide monopulse provides at least one waveguide port for receiving or transmitting an electromagnetic signal from or to the antenna device.

The antenna device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna device is a sub-array of an antenna array, and wherein the antenna array comprises a plurality of the antenna device, and wherein the antenna array is fabricated as a single metal element by the three-dimensional printing process such that manufacturing the antenna array does not require a separate joining process for joining the plurality of the antenna device of the antenna array.

22. The antenna device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more heat sink fins formed together as one or more components of the single metal element that further comprises the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements and the combiner network.

23. The antenna device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more repositioning elements.

24. An antenna device, comprising:

a plurality of dual polarized radiating elements;

a combiner network comprising two or more combiners that each combine electromagnetic signals in a waveguide cavity; and

a chassis providing one or more mounting holes;

wherein the combiner network combines electromagnetic energy from the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements into a single first port associated with a first polarization and a single second port associated with a second polarization; and

wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements, the combiner network, and the chassis are manufactured together as a single metal element by a three-dimensional printing process such that manufacturing the single metal element does not require a separate joining process for joining separate components.

25. The antenna device of claim 24 , further comprising one or more heat sink fins formed on the chassis as one or more components of the single metal element that further comprises the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements, the combiner network, and the chassis.

26. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises a septum polarizer formed integrally with each one of the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements.

27. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises one or more impedance steps.

28. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein each of the plurality of dual polarized radiating elements comprises a first waveguide port and a second waveguide port.

29. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein the combiner network comprises a chamfer that provides an impedance transition for a reduced height waveguide.

30. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein at least one of the two or more combiners of the combiner network is an H-plane shortwall combiner, and wherein the H-plane is an electromagnetic field that relates a direction of an electromagnetic signal to a corresponding magnetic field of the electromagnetic signal.

31. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein the combiner network comprises a four-to-one combiner network and further comprises four reduced height waveguide ports that are combined into an H-plane shortwall stage.

32. The antenna device of claim 24 , wherein the antenna device is a sub-array of an antenna array, and wherein the antenna array comprises a plurality of the antenna device.
