Abstract

A pedicle screw assembly including a bone fastener having a lower end for engaging bone and an upper end remote from the lower end; a head having a rod-receiving channel attached to the upper end of said bone fastener; a spinal rod insertable into the rod-receiving channel of said head, said spinal rod having an outer surface extending between first and second ends thereof, wherein at least one of the first and second ends has a reduced diameter section. A spinal rod having an outer surface extending between a first end and a second end thereof; wherein the outer surface of said spinal rod has a reduced diameter section at at least one of the first and second ends.

Claims (26)

1. A method of implanting a stabilizing rod in a spinal segment, comprising the steps of:

anchoring a lower end of at least one bone fastener in a bone of the spinal segment, the at least one bone fastener also including an upper end;

selecting at least one stabilizing rod from a plurality of stabilizing rods and seating the rod in the upper end of the at least one bone fastener, the at least one stabilizing rod having a length, first and second ends, a curvature and an alignment marker for identifying an axis of curvature of the at least one stabilizing rod, the rod further including a central region with a constant central cross section, the first end having multiple cross sections smaller than the central cross section, at least one of the multiple cross sections having a constant cross section along a first end length; and

orienting the curvature of the at least one stabilizing rod based on the alignment marker during the seating step.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the seating and orienting of the at least one stabilizing rod are performed using at least one rod inserter, wherein a ball socket at the distal end of the rod inserter engages the first end.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the orienting step includes repositioning the ball socket relative to the first end.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising at least a second stabilizing rod and a second rod inserter, wherein the outer surface of the at least second stabilizing rod has a reduced diameter section at at least one of the first and second ends and a ball socket at the distal end of the second rod inserter engages the reduced diameter section of the second stabilizing rod.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selected stabilizing rod has a length and curvature matching the normal curvature of the spinal segment.

6. A method of spine fusion, comprising the steps of:

selecting a stabilizing rod from a plurality of rods of different lengths and/or curvatures;

attaching a first end of the stabilizing rod to an inserter, the first end having multiple cross sections smaller than that of a central region of the rod, at least one of the multiple cross sections having a constant cross section along a first end length and;

inserting the rod in the body of a patient to seat the rod in a bone fastener in a bone of the spinal segment,

wherein the inserting step includes orienting a curvature of the at least one stabilizing rod based on an alignment marker.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the attaching step includes inserting the first end in a ball socket at a distal end of the rod inserter.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the inserting step includes repositioning the ball socket relative to the first end.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of bending the rod from an initial curvature to a second curvature.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein the stabilizing rod has a length and curvature matching the normal curvature of the spinal segment.

11. A method of implanting a stabilizing rod in a spinal segment, comprising the steps of:

selecting a stabilizing rod from a plurality of rods of different lengths and/or curvatures;

attaching a first end of the stabilizing rod to an inserter, the first end having a cross section smaller than that of a central region of the rod, the first end cross section having a constant cross section along a first end length and;

inserting the rod in the body of a patient to seat the rod in a bone fastener in a bone of the spinal segment,

wherein the inserting step includes orienting a curvature of the at least one stabilizing rod based on an alignment marker.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the attaching step includes inserting the first end in a ball socket at a distal end of the rod inserter.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the inserting step includes repositioning the ball socket relative to the first end.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising the step of bending the rod from an initial curvature to a second curvature.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing rod has a length and curvature matching the normal curvature of the spinal segment.
