Abstract

A coupling mechanism for a medication delivery device includes a first part axially fixed relative to a housing and rotatable around a longitudinal axis of the first part, the first part having a gearing engagement to a second part arranged along the longitudinal axis, the gearing engagement having a first frictional resistance. The second part axially moveable along the longitudinal axis, and directly or indirectly in a friction fit engagement with the housing, which has a second frictional resistance. The first frictional resistance being below the second frictional resistance such that a rotation of the first part in a first direction axially longitudinally moves the second part away from the first part and a rotation in a second direction, opposite to the first rotation direction, reduces the axial distance between the first and second part and/or axially moves the second part into coupling abutment with the first part.

Claims (19)

1. A coupling mechanism for a medication delivery device arranged within a housing, the coupling mechanism comprising:

a first part having a longitudinal axis and which is axially fixed with respect to the housing and rotatable about the longitudinal axis, the first part comprising a gearing engagement to a second part which is arranged along the longitudinal axis, the gearing engagement having a first frictional resistance,

wherein the second part is rotatable around and axially moveable along the longitudinal axis, and directly or indirectly in a friction fit engagement with respect to the housing, the friction fit engagement having a second frictional resistance, and

wherein the first frictional resistance is below the second frictional resistance such that a rotation of the first part in a first rotational direction axially moves the second part away from the first part along the longitudinal axis, and a rotation in a second rotational direction, opposite the first rotational direction, reduces an axial distance between the first and second part and further rotation in the second rotational direction axially moves the second part into a coupling abutment with the first part,

wherein the friction fit engagement with respect to the housing is provided between the second part and a third part that is axially fixed with respect to the housing and rotatable about the longitudinal axis,

wherein the second part is moveable towards the third part once the first part is rotated in the first rotational direction, and

wherein the second part and third part form a one-way clutch comprised of a one-way ratchet system which is closed once the second part abuts the third part, and the first part, the second part and the third part co-rotate in the first rotational direction.

2. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the gearing engagement between the first part and second part is configured as at least one thread segment present on the first part engaging at least one thread follower present on the second part or as at least one thread segment present on the second part engaging at least one thread follower present on the first part.

3. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the friction fit engagement with respect to the housing of the second part allows for axial and/or rotational movements with respect to the housing when the second frictional resistance has been overcome.

4. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the friction fit engagement with respect to the housing provided between the second part and the housing is exerted by at least one O-ring, or at least one flexural element, or a friction coupling.

5. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the third part is in a second friction fit engagement with the housing having a third frictional resistance.

6. The coupling mechanism according to claim 5 , wherein the third frictional resistance is above the second frictional resistance.

7. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the first part, the second part and the third part are configured as concentrically arranged sleeves, wherein the third part surrounds the first part and the second part, and wherein the first part surrounds the second part or the second part surrounds the first part.

8. The coupling mechanism according to claim 5 , wherein the second friction fit engagement with respect to the housing between the third part and the housing forms a sterile barrier between a first compartment within the housing and a second compartment within the housing.

9. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the second part is arranged along the longitudinal axis between the first part and the third part.

10. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the one-way clutch is opened once the first part rotates in the second rotational direction and the second part axially moves towards the first part.

11. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the third part activates upon rotation in the first rotational direction an insertion mechanism for an injection needle of the medication delivery device.

12. The coupling mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein when the second part moves into the coupling abutment with the first part, the first and second part co-rotate.

13. A medication delivery device comprising the coupling mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the medication delivery device is a bolus injector, a patch injector or a patch pump.
