Abstract

An image capture device includes an image capture module and a base module. The image capture module is releasably connectable to the base module. The image capture module includes an integrated image sensor and optical component for capturing image data. The base module includes a processor. The processor is configured and the base module is calibrated based on identification data provided by the image capture module when releasably connected to the base module. The image information and identification data may be wirelessly transferred from the image capture module to the base module.

Claims (32)

1. An image capturing device, comprising:

an image capture module having an integrated image sensor and optical component assembly, wherein the integrated image sensor and optical component assembly is configured to capture image information; and

a base module having a processor for processing the image information and a user interface,

wherein the image capture module is releasably attachable to the base module,

wherein the processor is configurable based on identification data received from the image capture module when the image capture module is releasably attached to the base module, and

wherein the user interface is configurable based on the identification data.

2. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is at least one of a system-on-chip and an image signal processor.

3. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the image capture module is further configured to wirelessly transmit the image information and the identification data to the base module.

4. The image capturing device of claim 1 , the base module including a first mounting structure and the image capture module including a second mounting structure, wherein the first mounting structure and the second mounting structure are configured and dimensioned for releasable attachment of the image capture module with the base module and provide mechanical coupling and electrical connectivity between the image capture module and the base module.

5. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the image capture module is a plurality of image capture modules, each image capture module having an integrated image sensor and optical component assembly which has different image sensor properties and optical component properties and each image capture module being configured for releasable attachment to the base module.

6. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the image capture module is configured to draw power from the base module.

7. The image capturing device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an interface, the interface configured to be in mechanical cooperation with the base module and in electrical communication with the image capturing module,

wherein the interface is configured to assist in data transfer between the image capture module and the base module, and

wherein the image capture module is configured to draw power from at least one of the interface and the base module.

8. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to calibrate at least the base module based on the identification data.

9. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the image capture module includes a first housing that environmentally seals an image sensor and the base module includes a second housing that environmentally seals the processor.

10. The image capturing device of claim 1 , wherein the image capture module is configured to store at least the identification data that is transferred to the base module and in accordance with which the base module operates the image capture module.

11. A method of using an image capturing device, comprising:

releasable attaching an image capture module to a base module to form the image capturing device;

receiving image capture module control information at the base module from the image capture module, wherein the image capture module control information is different for different image capture modules;

configuring a processor and an user interface in the base module and calibrating the base module based on the image capture module control information; and calibrating the user interface of the base module based on the image capture module control information;

capturing an image using the releasably attached image capture module.

12. The method of claim 11 , the method further comprising:

wirelessly transferring the image capture module control information to the base module from the image capture module.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

providing bidirectional electrical communication between the base module and the image capturing device upon releasable attachment; and

powering the image capture module from at least one of the base module and a power source of the image capture module.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

mechanically connecting the base module to an interface;

electrically connecting the base module and the image capture module to the interface; and

powering the image capture module from at least one of the base module, the interface, and a power source of the image capture module.
