Abstract

A surgical stapling system is disclosed comprising a proximal housing portion, a distal housing portion removably coupleable to the proximal housing portion at a coupling interface, a motor, and a power source in electrical communication with the motor along an electrical communication pathway that does not traverse the coupling interface. The power source is configured to provide energy to the motor along the electrical communication pathway. The power source is permitted to provide energy to the motor based on the distal housing portion being coupled to the proximal housing portion.

Claims (34)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a proximal housing portion;

a distal housing portion removably coupleable to said proximal housing portion at a coupling interface;

a motor; and

a power source in electrical communication with said motor along an electrical communication pathway that does not traverse said coupling interface, wherein said power source is configured to provide energy to said motor along said electrical communication pathway, and wherein said power source is permitted to provide energy to said motor based on said distal housing portion being coupled to said proximal housing portion.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising an end effector extending from said distal housing portion, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position.

3. The surgical stapling system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a threaded drive screw operably coupled to said motor; and

a firing member operably coupled to said threaded drive screw, wherein said firing member is movable between a proximal position and a distal position, and wherein rotation of said threaded drive screw is configured to move said firing member toward said distal position.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , wherein said firing member is configured to position said second jaw relative to said first jaw based on said firing member moving toward said distal position.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 5 , wherein said firing member is configured to deploy said staples from said staple cartridge based on said firing member moving toward said distal position.

7. The surgical stapling system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a threaded drive screw operably coupled to said motor; and

a drive nut operably coupled to said threaded drive screw, wherein said drive nut is movable between a first position and a second position, and wherein said second jaw is configured to rotate toward said first jaw based on said drive nut moving toward said second position.

8. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a first stapling portion;

a second stapling portion removably coupleable to said first stapling portion at a coupling interface;

a motorized system; and

a power supply configured to provide energy to said motorized system, wherein energy from said power supply is configured to flow toward said motorized system along a flow path that does not cross said coupling interface, and wherein said power supply is prevented from providing energy to said motorized system absent said first stapling portion being coupled to said second stapling portion.

9. The surgical stapling system of claim 8 , further comprising an end effector extending from said second stapling portion, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw between an open position and a closed position.

10. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a threaded drive screw operably coupled to said motorized system; and

a firing member operably coupled to said threaded drive screw, wherein said firing member is movable between an unfired position and a fired position, and wherein rotation of said threaded drive screw is configured to move said firing member toward said fired position.

11. The surgical stapling system of claim 10 , wherein said firing member is configured to position said second jaw relative to said first jaw based on said firing member moving toward said fired position.

12. The surgical stapling system of claim 11 , wherein said end effector further comprises a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein.

13. The surgical stapling system of claim 12 , wherein said firing member is configured to deploy said staples from said staple cartridge based on said firing member moving toward said fired position.

14. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a threaded drive screw operably coupled to said motorized system; and

a drive nut operably coupled to said threaded drive screw, wherein said drive nut is movable between a first position and a second position, and wherein said second jaw is configured to move toward said first jaw based on said drive nut moving toward said second position.
