Abstract

A method and apparatus for delivering power to a hybrid vehicle is disclosed. The apparatus includes an apparatus for delivering power to a hybrid vehicle, the hybrid vehicle including a powertrain having a power take-off coupling, the powertrain including an engine and a transmission. The apparatus includes an electric motor operable to generate a torque, the motor being coupled to transmit a starting torque through the power take-off of the powertrain for starting the engine.

Claims (36)

1. A hybrid electric vehicle comprising:

a planetary gear system comprising a plurality of planetary gears;

an engine coupled to the planetary gear system;

an electric motor coupled to the planetary gear system;

a differential coupled to the planetary gear system; and

a braking device coupled to a planetary gear of the planetary gear system to selectively inhibit the rotation of the gear;

the planetary gear system being configured to allow the electric motor to provide a starting torque to the engine when the gear coupled to the braking device is not inhibited from rotating by the braking device; and

the planetary gear system being configured to allow the electric motor to provide a drive torque to the differential via at least one planetary gear of the planetary gear system when the planetary gear coupled to the braking device is inhibited from rotating by the braking device.

2. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the planetary gear system is further configured to allow the electric motor to provide electrical power driven by the engine when the gear coupled to the braking device is inhibited from rotating by the braking device.

3. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 2 , wherein the electric power is used for charging an energy storage element.

4. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 2 , wherein the planetary gear system is configured to allow the engine to provide a drive torque to the differential and the electric motor to provide electrical power driven by the engine during a mode of operation when the planetary gear coupled to the braking device is inhibited from rotating by the braking device.

5. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor is an AC electric motor and an inverter is coupled to the electric motor.

6. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 5 , wherein the electric motor is a permanent magnet electric motor.

7. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the planetary gear system comprises a sun gear, a ring gear, and a planet carrier gear between the sun gear and ring gear.

8. The hybrid electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a power take off coupled between the planetary gear system and the engine, the power take off being configured to allow the electric motor to provide a starting torque to the engine when the planetary gear coupled to the braking device is not inhibited from rotating by the braking device.

9. A method of operating a hybrid electric vehicle including a planetary gear system comprising a plurality of planetary gears, an engine coupled to the planetary gear system, an electric motor coupled to the planetary gear system, a differential coupled to the planetary gear system, and a braking device coupled to a planetary gear of the planetary gear system, the method comprising:

selectively not inhibiting the planetary gear coupled to the braking device from rotating to allow the electric motor to provide a starting torque to the engine; and

selectively inhibiting the planetary gear coupled to the braking device from rotating to allow the electric motor to provide a drive torque to the differential via at least one planetary gear of the planetary gear system.

10. The method of operating the hybrid electric vehicle of claim 9 , wherein selectively inhibiting the planetary gear coupled to the braking device from rotating further allows the electric motor to provide electrical power driven by the engine.

11. The method of operating the hybrid electric vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the electric power is used for charging an energy storage element.

12. The method of operating the hybrid electric vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the electric motor is an AC electric motor.

13. The method of operating the hybrid electric vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the electric motor is a permanent magnet electric motor.

14. The method of operating the hybrid electric vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the planetary gear system comprises a sun gear, a ring gear, and a planet carrier gear between the sun gear and ring gear.

15. An apparatus for a vehicle comprising:

a planetary gear system comprising a plurality of planetary gears;

an engine coupled to the planetary gear system;

an electric motor coupled to the planetary gear system;

a differential coupled to the planetary gear system; and

a braking device coupled to a planetary gear of the planetary gear system to selectively inhibit the rotation of the gear;

the planetary gear system being configured to allow the electric motor to provide a starting torque to the engine when the planetary gear coupled to the braking device is not inhibited from rotating by the braking device; and

the planetary gear system being configured to allow the electric motor to provide both a drive torque to the differential via at least one planetary gear of the planetary gear system and electrical power driven by the engine when the planetary gear coupled to the braking device is inhibited from rotating by the braking device.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the electric power is used for charging an energy storage element.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the electric motor is an AC electric motor and an inverter is coupled to the electric motor.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the electric motor is a permanent magnet electric motor.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the planetary gear system comprises a sun gear, a ring gear, and a planet carrier gear between the sun gear and ring gear.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising a power take off coupled between the planetary gear system and the engine, the power take off being configured to allow the electric motor to provide a starting torque to the engine when the planetary gear coupled to the braking device is not inhibited from rotating by the braking device.
