Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for simultaneously operating as a wireless radio and monitoring the local frequency spectrum. For example, described herein are wireless radio devices that use a secondary receiver to monitor frequencies within the operating band and prevent or avoid interferers, including in particular half-IF interferers. The systems, devices, and methods described herein may adjust the intermediate frequency in a superheterodyne receiver to select an intermediate frequency that minimizes interference. In particular, described herein are apparatuses and methods that use a second receiver which is independent of the first receiver and may be connected to the same receiving antenna to monitor the geographically local frequency spectrum and may detect spurious interferers, allowing the primary receiver to adjust the intermediate frequency and avoid spurious interferes.

Claims (38)

1. A wireless radio device configured to wirelessly receive and transmit radio frequency signals in an operating band, the device comprising:

an antenna;

a first receiver coupled to the antenna by a first receiving path for receiving a radio frequency signal within the operating band from the antenna;

a spectrum analyzer operating in parallel with the first receiving path, wherein the spectrum analyzer is configured to continuously scan through the operating band and collect spectrum information on the operating band concurrent with the first receiver receiving the radio frequency signal without modifying the wireless radio device using the collected spectrum information;

a spectrum processor coupled to the spectrum analyzer and configured to wirelessly transmit the spectrum information and geographic location information to a remote spectrum analysis unit;

a mixer configured to generate one or more intermediate frequencies from the radio frequency signal, wherein the wireless radio device is configured to operate in one or more channels corresponding to the one or more intermediate frequencies based on information received from the remote spectrum analysis unit.

2. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a transmitter, wherein the spectrum processor is configured to send instructions to the transmitter for wirelessly transmitting the spectrum information and geographic location information to the remote spectrum analysis unit.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver is part of a transceiver, wherein the spectrum processor is configured to send instructions to the transceiver for wirelessly transmitting the spectrum information and geographic location information to the remote spectrum analysis unit.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to wirelessly transmit information identifying the wireless radio device.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrum analyzer comprises a memory for storing the spectrum information for later transmission.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrum processor is configured to encode the spectrum information for transmission to the remote spectrum analysis unit.

7. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a second receiver coupled to the antenna in parallel with the first receiver.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the second receiver is coupled to the spectrum processor.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna is a receiving antenna configured to receive a first radio frequency signal, wherein the device further comprises a transmitting antenna configured to transmit a second radio frequency signal.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless radio device is configured to operate in a dynamically changing a frequency plan including the one or more channels based on the information received from the remote spectrum analysis unit.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the information from the remote spectrum analysis unit is received by the first receiver.

12. A wireless radio device configured to wirelessly receive and transmit radio frequency signals in an operating band, the device comprising:

an antenna;

a first receiver coupled to the antenna by a first receiving path for receiving a radio frequency signal from the antenna;

a second receiving path in parallel with the first receiving path, the second receiving path coupled to the antenna and connected to a spectrum analyzer, wherein the spectrum analyzer is configured to continuously scan the operating band while the first receiver receives the radio frequency signal and to record spectrum information on the operating band without modifying the wireless radio device using the recorded spectrum information;

a spectrum processor coupled to the spectrum analyzer and configured to encode the spectrum information and geographic information about the location of the device along with the spectrum information for transmission to a remote spectrum analysis unit; and

a mixer configured to generate one or more intermediate frequencies from the radio frequency signal, wherein the wireless radio device is configured to operate in one or more channels corresponding to the one or more intermediate frequencies based on information received from the remote spectrum analysis unit.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrum processor is configured to encode the geographic information with the spectrum information.

14. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a first transmitter coupled to the antenna for transmitting radio frequency signals from the antenna.

15. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a high selectivity receiver in the first receiving path configured to select an operational frequency for the first receiver from within the operating band.

16. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver is part of a transceiver comprising both a transmitter and a receiver.

17. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first receiver operates independently of the spectrum analyzer.

18. The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrum processor comprises a memory configured to store spectrum information for later transmission.

19. The device of claim 1 , wherein the spectrum processor is configured to encode the spectrum information.

20. A wireless radio device configured to wirelessly receive and transmit radio frequency signals in an operating band, the device comprising:

an antenna;
