Abstract

A method of processing a sample in a receptacle comprising a plurality of chambers. Each of the chambers is connected to at least one other chamber by a portal and at least a first one of the chambers is formed of a flexible material. The method includes the steps of causing gas bubbles contained in the first chamber to accumulate in a portion of the first chamber, applying a compressive external force to the first chamber to cause some or all of the liquid contents of the first chamber to flow into an interconnected second chamber through a portal connecting the first and second chambers; and preventing the gas bubbles accumulated in a portion of the first chamber from flowing through the portal into the second chamber.

Claims (10)

1. A method of processing a sample in a receptacle comprising a plurality of chambers, wherein each of the chambers is connected to at least one other chamber by a portal and at least a first one of the chambers is formed of a flexible material, the method comprising:

A. causing gas bubbles contained in the first chamber to accumulate in a portion of the first chamber;

B. applying a compressive external force to the first chamber to cause some or all liquid contents of the first chamber to flow into an interconnected second chamber through a portal connecting the first and second chambers; and

C. preventing the gas bubbles accumulated in a portion of the first chamber from flowing through the portal into the second chamber during step B;

wherein the gas bubbles are prevented from flowing through the portal into the second chamber during step B by a wall extending from a peripheral boundary of the first chamber into an interior space of the first chamber.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the gas bubbles to accumulate in a portion of the first chamber comprises orienting the receptacle so that the gas bubbles accumulate in an upper portion of the first chamber.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle comprises opposed members, at least one of the opposed members comprises a flexible sheet, and the plurality of chambers have perimeter walls defined by permanent seals formed between the opposed members.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle is oriented so that the wall extends into the interior space of the first chamber from a position above the portal connecting the first chamber to the second chamber, and a portion of the first chamber is disposed above the wall so that the gas bubbles can accumulate in the portion of the first chamber above the wall.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the liquid contents of the first chamber comprise a wash reagent.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portal connecting the first chamber to the second chamber comprises a peelable seal, and step B comprises applying sufficient compressive force to the first chamber to open the peelable seal.
