Abstract

A surgical stapling system comprising a housing, an end effector, a replaceable staple cartridge, a driver element, a motor-powered firing element, a remote user-controlled console, and a retraction assembly is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw. The first jaw is rotatable relative to the second jaw into a closed position. The driver element is translatable distally in response to a firing motion. The motor-powered firing element is advanceable from a proximal position to a fired position to apply the firing motion to the driver element. The motor-powered firing element is retractable from the fired position toward the proximal position. The remote user- controlled console is capable of controlling the actuation of the motor-powered firing element. The remote user-controlled console comprises apparatus for sensing the closure of the first jaw and apparatus for sensing the advancement and retraction of the motor-powered firing element.

Claims (33)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a housing assembly;

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a reciprocatable closure element actuatable into a closed state to move said first jaw into a closed position in response to a closure motion;

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

a second reciprocatable element advanceable to move said first jaw toward said closed position, wherein said second reciprocatable element is advanceable and retractable along a longitudinal axis between a proximal position and a fired position;

a driver element supported in said end effector for axial motion in response to a firing motion;

a motor-powered firing element configured to apply said firing motion to said driver element, wherein said firing motion is independent of said closure motion;

a remote user-controlled console capable of controlling the actuation of said motor-powered firing element, wherein said remote user-controlled console comprises:

means for sensing the closure of said first jaw;

means for sensing the advancement and retraction of said second reciprocatable element; and

means for preventing the advancement of the second reciprocatable element if said reciprocatable closure element is not in said closed state; and

a retraction assembly supported by said housing assembly configured for manual rotary actuation which is exclusively dedicated to the retraction of said second reciprocatable element from said fired position to said proximal position.

2. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a housing;

an elongate shaft extending from said housing comprising a longitudinal shaft axis;

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft; and

means for articulating said end effector with respect to said longitudinal shaft axis by the application of articulating and straightening motions.

3. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a housing;

an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw into a closed position, and wherein said second jaw comprises a distal end;

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein;

a driver element translatable distally in response to a firing motion;

a motor-powered firing element advanceable from a proximal position to a fired position to apply said firing motion to said driver element, wherein said motor-powered firing element is retractable from said fired position toward said proximal position;

a remote user-controlled console capable of controlling the actuation of said motor-powered firing element, wherein said remote user-controlled console comprises:

means for sensing the closure of said first jaw; and

means for sensing the advancement and retraction of said motor-powered firing element; and

a retraction assembly supported by said housing configured for manual rotary actuation which is exclusively dedicated to the retraction of said motor-powered firing element from said fired position to said proximal position.

4. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , wherein said retraction assembly comprises a rotatable crank rotatably mounted to said housing.

5. The surgical stapling system of claim 4 , wherein said retraction assembly comprises a gear drive operably connecting said rotatable crank and said motor-powered firing element.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , wherein said motor-powered firing element is advanceable from said proximal position to said fired position in response to a rotary motion generated in said housing.

7. The surgical stapling system of claim 6 , further comprising an elongate shaft extending from said housing, wherein said end effector extends from said elongate shaft, and wherein at least a portion of said motor-powered firing element is positioned between said end effector and said elongate shaft.

8. The surgical stapling system of claim 3 , further comprising an indicator configured to visually indicate a current position of said motor-powered firing element.
