Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer program products for managing Internet of Things (IoT) network-connected devices.

Claims (82)

1. A method for establishing a secure connection between any one of a plurality of devices and a host server, the method comprising:

receiving a query from the any one of the plurality of devices, the query to locate a dotted quad IP address for a given first URL;

processing in response to the query, a fractional subdomain portion of the first URL that comprises at least a first token of another one of the plurality of devices and a second token of the host server;

forming a second URL based on the fractional subdomain portion of the first URL, wherein the second URL comprises at least one wildcard character and at least one of the first token of the another one of the plurality of devices or the second token of the host server in a fractional subdomain position of the second URL;

causing the first URL to be mapped to the second URL;

based on the query, selecting a wildcard digital security certificate associated with the second URL for the another one of the plurality of devices and the host server to serve to at least the any one of the plurality of devices;

using the second URL to configure the any one of the plurality of devices, including:

establishing a connection with the any one of the plurality of devices, and

communicating a provisioning file to the any one of the plurality of devices using the connection, wherein the provisioning file is used by the any one of the plurality of devices to at least one of:

set configurable parameters of the any one of the plurality of devices, or

install or update software on the any one of the plurality of devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending the wildcard digital security certificate to at least the any one of the plurality of devices.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending the dotted quad IP address to at least the any one of the plurality of devices, wherein the dotted quad IP address is an IP address of the host server.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first URL is generated using a random subdomain generator.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wildcard character is an asterisk.

The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of, the any one of the plurality of devices or a second device of the plurality of devices comprises at least one of, a cellular phone, a mobile phone, a smart phone, an internet phone, a wireless phone, a personal digital assistant device, a remote communication device, a wireless device, a music player, a video player, a media player, a multimedia player, a video recorder, a VCR, a DVR, a book reader, a voice recorder, a voice controlled system, a voice controller, a camera, a social interaction device, a radio, a TV, a watch, a personal communication device, an electronic wallet, an electronic currency, a smart card, a smart credit card, an electronic money device, an electronic coin, an electronic token, an instance of smart 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting a user interface on a display terminal, wherein the user interface includes one or more first fields for user entry of a first device type corresponding to the any one of the plurality of devices, and wherein the user interface includes one or more second fields for user entry of a second device type;

recognizing the first device type to associate one or more aspects of the first device type;

configuring a domain name service server using at least one aspect of the first device type;

recognizing the second device type to associate one or more aspects of the second device type; and

configuring the domain name service server using at least one aspect of the second device type, wherein the domain name service server is operable to initiate network communication between a first instance of a device of the first device type and a second instance of a device of the second device type.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising: creating an internet connection between the any one of the plurality of devices and a set of one or more target devices.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

registering the any one of the plurality of devices to receive messages from one or more notification devices;

selecting a notification server from a plurality of servers to receive a notification message from at least one notification device;

receiving the notification message at the notification server; and

forwarding the notification message from the notification server to at least one of the plurality of devices.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

authenticating at least one aspect of the provisioning file; and

decrypting at least one aspect of the provisioning file.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the host server is configured to respond only to requests from IP addresses in a predefined IP address range.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first URL includes a plurality of portions including a top-level domain portion, a domain portion, and the fractional subdomain portion; and

wherein the another one of the plurality of devices is a target device of the plurality of devices, and wherein processing the fractional subdomain portion of the first URL includes:

parsing the first URL to identify the fractional subdomain portion from among the plurality of portions of the first URL, and

parsing the fractional subdomain portion to identify the first token of the target device and the second token of the host server; and

wherein the second URL comprises the top-level domain portion, the domain portion, the second token of the host server, and the at least one wildcard character, and wherein the at least one wildcard character accepts any target device token; and

wherein use of the second URL enables secure connections to multiple devices of the plurality of devices served through multiple host servers with the wildcard digital security certificate.

A computer readable medium, embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium, the non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon a sequence of instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform a set of acts for establishing a secure connection between any one of a plurality of devices and a host server, the acts comprising:

receiving a query from one of the plurality of devices, the query to locate a dotted quad IP address for a given first URL;

processing, in response to the query, a fractional subdomain portion of the first URL that comprises at least a first token of another one of the plurality of devices and a second token of the host server;

forming a second URL based on the fractional subdomain portion of the first URL, wherein the second URL comprises at least one wildcard character and at least one of the first token of the another one of the plurality of devices or the second token of the host server in a fractional subdomain position of the second URL;

causing the first URL to be mapped to the second URL;

based on the query, selecting a wildcard digital security certificate associated with the second URL for the another one of the plurality of devices and the host server to serve to at least the any one of the plurality of devices;

using the second URL to configure the any one of the plurality of devices, including:

establishing a connection with the any one of the plurality of devices, and

communicating a provisioning file to the any one of the plurality of devices using the connection, wherein the provisioning file is used by the any one of the plurality of devices to at least one of:

set configurable parameters of the any one of the plurality of devices, or

install or update software on the any one of the plurality of devices.

The computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform acts of sending the wildcard digital security certificate to at least the any one of the plurality of devices.

The computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform acts of sending the dotted quad IP address to at least the any one of the plurality of devices, wherein the dotted quad IP address is an IP address of the host server.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the first URL is generated using a random subdomain generator.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the wildcard character is an asterisk.

The computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein at least one of, the any one of the plurality of devices or a second device of the plurality of devices comprises at least one of, a cellular phone, a mobile phone, a smart phone, an internet phone, a wireless phone, a personal digital assistant device, a remote communication device, a wireless device, a music player, a video player, a media player, a multimedia player, a video recorder, a VCR, a DVR, a book reader, a voice recorder, a voice controlled system, a voice controller, a camera, a social interaction device, a radio, a TV, a watch, a personal communication device, an electronic wallet, an electronic currency, smart card, a smart credit card, an electronic money device, an electronic coin, an electronic token, an instance 19. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform acts of:

presenting a user interface on a display terminal, wherein the user interface includes one or more first fields for user entry of a first device type corresponding to the any one of the plurality of devices, and wherein the user interface includes one or more second fields for user entry of a second device type;

recognizing the first device type to associate one or more aspects of the first device type;

configuring a domain name service server using at least one aspect of the first device type;

recognizing the second device type to associate one or more aspects of the second device type; and

configuring the domain name service server using at least one aspect of the second device type, wherein the domain name service server is operable to initiate network communication between a first instance of a device of the first device type and a second instance of a device of the second device type.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 19 , further comprising instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform acts of:

creating an internet connection between the any one of the plurality of devices and a set of one or more target devices.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by the one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform acts of:

registering the any one of the plurality of devices to receive messages from one or more notification devices;

selecting a notification server from a plurality of servers to receive a notification message from at least one notification device;

receiving the notification message at the notification server; and

forwarding the notification message from the notification server to at least one of the plurality of devices.

22. A system for establishing a secure connection between any one of a plurality of devices and a host server, the system comprising:

a storage medium having stored thereon a sequence of instructions; and

one or more processors that execute the instructions to cause the one or more processors to perform a set of acts, the acts comprising,

receiving a query from the any one of the plurality of devices, the query to locate a dotted quad IP address for a given first URL;

processing, in response to the query, a fractional subdomain portion of the first URL that comprises at least a first token of another one of the plurality of devices and a second token of the host server;

forming a second URL based on the fractional subdomain portion of the first URL, wherein the second URL comprises at least one wildcard character and at least one of the first token of the another one of the plurality of devices or the second token of the host server in a fractional subdomain position of the second URL;

causing the first URL to be mapped to the second URL;

based on the query, selecting a wildcard digital security certificate associated with the second URL for the another one of the plurality of devices and the host server to serve to at least the any one of the plurality of devices;

using the second URL to configure the any one of the plurality of devices, including:

establishing a connection with the any one of the plurality of devices, and

communicating a provisioning file to the any one of the plurality of devices using the connection, wherein the provisioning file is used by the any one of the plurality of devices to at least one of:

set configurable parameters of the any one of the plurality of devices, or

install or update software on the any one of the plurality of devices.

23. The system of claim 22 , further comprising sending the dotted quad IP address to at least the any one of the plurality of devices,

wherein the dotted quad IP address is an IP address of the host server.
