Abstract

A storage area for an electric vehicle includes a rigid tunnel positioned within a passenger compartment of the electric vehicle. The tunnel covers a portion of a battery assembly that extends above a floor structure of the vehicle such that the passenger compartment is sealed from the battery assembly. A center console is positioned within the passenger compartment. The center console is disposed on top of the tunnel such that a medial portion of the center console is spaced a vertical distance above a top surface of the rigid tunnel. A first end and a second end of the center console are coupled with the top surface of the rigid tunnel. A thickness of the medial portion is less than that of the first end and the second end. A space between the top surface of the tunnel and a bottom surface of the medial portion defines the storage area.

Claims (52)

1. A storage area for an electric vehicle, the storage area comprising:

a rigid tunnel positioned within a passenger compartment of the electric vehicle, the rigid tunnel extending above and covering at least a portion of a battery connector housing of a battery assembly that extends above a floor structure of the electric vehicle such that the passenger compartment is sealed from the battery assembly, wherein:

a front end of the rigid tunnel is coupled with a firewall of the electric vehicle; and

a top surface of the rigid tunnel tapers downward from the front end to a rear end;

a center console positioned within the passenger compartment, the center console comprising a top member that is positioned directly above and spaced apart from at least a portion of the top surface of the rigid tunnel by a vertical distance, the center console comprising a first end member and a second end member that support the top member at the vertical distance, wherein:

a space formed between the top surface of the rigid tunnel and a bottom surface of the top member defines a storage area; and

a door positioned on the top member of the center console, the door providing access to the storage area.

2. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the rigid tunnel houses one or more conduits that are configured to.

3. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the vertical distance is constant across a length of the top member.

4. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the door is lockable.

5. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the storage area is accessible from both a driver side and a passenger side of the passenger compartment.

6. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the storage area comprises an open shelf positioned beneath the top member of the center console.

7. A storage area for an electric vehicle, the storage area comprising:

a rigid tunnel positioned within a passenger compartment of the electric vehicle, the rigid tunnel extending above and covering at least a portion of a battery connector housing of a battery assembly that extends above a floor structure of the electric vehicle such that the passenger compartment is sealed from the battery assembly, wherein:

a front end of the rigid tunnel is coupled with a firewall of the electric vehicle; and

a front section of the rigid tunnel projects higher into the passenger compartment than a rear section of the rigid tunnel;

a center console positioned within the passenger compartment, the center console comprising a top member that is positioned directly above and spaced apart from at least a portion of a top surface of the rigid tunnel by a vertical distance, the center console comprising a first end member and a second end member that support the top member at the vertical distance, wherein:

a top surface of the top member defines a storage tray and at least two cup holders; and

a space formed between the top surface of the rigid tunnel and a bottom surface of the top member defines a storage area; and

a door positioned on the top member of the center console, the door providing access to the storage area.

8. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein:

the storage area is positioned beneath the one or more cup holders.

9. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein:

the rigid tunnel houses one or more conduits that are configured to direct air from an air supply system from a front of the rigid tunnel to a rear of the rigid tunnel.

10. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein:

the storage area is accessible from both a driver side and a passenger side of the passenger compartment.

11. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein:

a thickness of the top member is less than a thickness of each of the first end member and the second end member.

12. The storage area for an electric vehicle of claim 7 , wherein:

the vertical distance is constant across a length of the top member.

13. A method of storing an item in an electric vehicle, the method comprising:

providing access to a storage area of an electric vehicle by opening a door positioned on a top member of a center console, the storage area being defined by a space between a top surface of a rigid tunnel and a bottom surface of the top member of the center console within a passenger compartment of an electric vehicle, wherein:

a front end of the rigid tunnel is coupled with a firewall of the electric vehicle;

the top surface of the rigid tunnel tapers downward from the front end to a rear end;

the rigid tunnel extends above and covers at least a portion of a battery connector housing of a battery assembly that extends above a top surface of a floor structure of the electric vehicle such that the passenger compartment is sealed from the battery assembly; and

the top member is positioned directly above and spaced apart from at least a portion of the top surface of the rigid tunnel by a vertical distance, the center console comprising a first end member and a second end member that support the top member at the vertical distance; and

placing an item within the storage area.

14. The method of storing an item in an electric vehicle of claim 13 , further comprising:

closing the door of the storage area after placing the item within the storage area.

15. The method of storing an item in an electric vehicle of claim 14 , further comprising:

locking the door after closing the door.

16. The method of storing an item in an electric vehicle of claim 13 , wherein:

the storage area is accessible from both a driver side and a passenger side of the passenger compartment.

17. The method of storing an item in an electric vehicle of claim 13 , wherein:

providing access to a storage area comprises unlocking the door of the storage area.

18. The method of storing an item in an electric vehicle of claim 13 , wherein:

placing the item within the storage area comprises inserting the item through an aperture defined within a top surface of the center console.
