Abstract

Techniques are described herein for delivering retrodirective wireless radio frequency (RF) power to a client device in a wireless power delivery environment. More specifically, embodiments of the present disclosure describe techniques for delivering directed wireless RF power to a client device in a wireless power delivery environment via multiple wireless power signals over multiple wireless power delivery paths. The client device includes one or more RF client transceivers that collectively have a radiation and reception pattern in a three-dimensional space proximate to the client device. The techniques identify the wireless power delivery paths over which wireless power signals can be delivered and deliver the wireless power in a manner that matches the client radiation and reception pattern in the three-dimensional space proximate to the client device.

Claims (36)

1. A wireless power transmission system, comprising:

an adaptively-phased antenna array having multiple transceivers;

control circuitry configured to:

identify one or more receive characteristics of a calibration signal at multiple transceivers, wherein the calibration signal is transmitted by one or more transceivers of a client device in a multipath wireless power delivery environment; and

determine one or more wireless power transmit characteristics for the multiple transceivers based on the one or more receive characteristics,

wherein the wireless power transmit characteristics identify a configuration for transmitting wireless power signals over multiple paths that constructively interfere in a three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space proximate to the client device.

2. The wireless power transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

configure the multiple transceivers in accordance with the one or more wireless power transmit characteristics; and

direct the multiple transceivers to transmit the wireless power transmission signals.

3. The wireless power transmission system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the multiple paths comprises a non-line of sight path.

4. The wireless power transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more receive characteristic of the calibration signal comprise a phase at which the calibration signal is received at each of the multiple transceivers.

5. The wireless power transmission system of claim 4 , wherein the one or more receive characteristics of the calibration signal further comprise one or more of signal shape characteristics or signal strength characteristics that are measured at each of the multiple transceivers.

6. The wireless power transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more wireless power transmit characteristics comprise transceiver phase settings.

7. The wireless power transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the client device directionally transmits the calibration signal based on the three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space via the one or more transceivers of the client device.

8. The wireless power transmission system of claim 7 , wherein each transceiver of the multiple transceivers of the wireless power transmission system comprises a configurable direction or beam antenna that radiates or receives in a particular direction or directional pattern.

9. The wireless power transmission system of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space comprises a directive pattern.

10. The wireless power transmission system of claim 9 , wherein the three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space proximate to the client device comprises one or more three dimensional lobes.

11. A method comprising:

receiving, at multiple transceivers of a wireless power transmission system, a calibration signal transmitted by a client device in the multipath wireless power delivery environment, wherein the client device includes one or more transceivers having a three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space proximate to the client device;

identifying one or more receive characteristic of the calibration signal at each of the multiple transceivers; and

determining one or more wireless power transmit characteristics for the multiple transceivers based on the one or more receive characteristics, wherein the wireless power transmit characteristics identify a configuration for transmitting wireless power signals over multiple paths that constructively interfere in the three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more receive characteristic of the calibration signal one or more of a phase at which the calibration signal is received, a signal shape characteristic, or a signal strength characteristic.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more wireless power transmit characteristics comprise transceiver phase settings.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein each transceiver of the multiple RF transceivers of the wireless power transmission system comprises a configurable direction or beam antenna that radiates or receives in a particular direction or directional pattern.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

configuring the multiple transceivers in accordance with the one or more wireless power transmit characteristics; and

directing the multiple transceivers to transmit the wireless power transmission signals.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the multiple paths comprises a non-line of sight path.

17. A system comprising:

means for identifying one or more receive characteristics of a calibration signal at multiple transceivers, wherein the calibration signal is transmitted by one or more transceivers of a client device in a multipath wireless power delivery environment; and

means for determining one or more wireless power transmit characteristics for the multiple transceivers based on the one or more receive characteristics, wherein the wireless power transmit characteristics identify a configuration for transmitting wireless power signals over multiple paths that constructively interfere in a three-dimensional client radiation and reception pattern space proximate to the client device.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising:

means for configuring the multiple transceivers in accordance with the one or more wireless power transmit characteristics; and

means for directing the multiple transceivers to transmit the wireless power transmission signals.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the multiple paths comprises a non-line of sight path.

20. The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more receive characteristic of the calibration signal comprise one or more of a phase at which the calibration signal is received, a signal shape characteristic, or a signal strength characteristic.
