Abstract

Systems, delivery devices, and methods to treat to ablate, damage, or otherwise affect tissue. The treatment systems are capable of delivering energy to nerve tissue in a target region such that at least a portion of the nerve tissue is replaced by scar tissue or otherwise altered to inhibit reinnervation in the target region.

Claims (15)

1. A method of treating a subject, comprising:

positioning an energy delivery device in a lumen of an airway of the subject; and

intraluminally delivering energy from the energy delivery device to nerve tissue positioned along the airway of a bronchial tree to injure the nerve tissue and decrease airway resistance of a distal portion of the bronchial tree from a first airway resistance to a second airway resistance, wherein the injury to the nerve tissue initially forms a lesion which is replaced by sufficient scar tissue to substantially prevent reinnervation of the nerve tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein intraluminally delivering the energy forms one or more scars along the nerve tissue that prevent functional recovery of the distal portion of a lung for at least 6 months.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising delivering energy to the nerve tissue to reinjure the nerve tissue after tissue of the nerve tissue has regrown enough to cause at least partial functional recovery.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein intraluminally delivering the energy comprises:

damaging substantially all of the axons of a nerve fascicle of the nerve tissue using the delivered energy;

damaging myelins of the nerve fascicle using the delivered energy; and

damaging endoneuriums of the nerve fascicle using the delivered energy.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein intraluminally delivering the energy comprises damaging a sufficient number of nerve fascicles of the nerve tissue to cause opening of airways distal to the injured tissue.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein intraluminally delivering the energy includes destroying the axons, myelins, and endoneuriums of a plurality of nerve fascicles of the nerve tissue.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein intraluminally delivering the energy includes delivering about 10 watts to about 30 watts to an ablation electrode over a range of time of about 30 to about 240 seconds while the ablation electrode is generally stationary relative to the airway.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

forming the scar tissue from substantially all tissues along a longitudinal section of the nerve tissue.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein intraluminally delivering the energy comprises delivering energy selected from the group consisting of thermal energy, cryogenic energy, electrical energy, acoustic energy, radio frequency energy, pulsed high voltage energy, mechanical energy, ionizing radiation, optical energy, and combinations thereof.
