Abstract

A codeset is described in a Public Codeset Communication Format (PCCF) as a format block including a plurality of fields having readily decipherable values, such as ASCII character values. One field is a mark/space information field that includes a sequence of mark time indicators and space time indicators for an operational signal of the codeset. A second field is a signal characteristic information field for the operational signal. Signal characteristic information may include carrier on/off information, repeat frame information, toggle control information, and last frame information. The PCCF is a codeset interchange format of general applicability.

Claims (18)

1. A controlling device, comprising:

a processing device;

a transmitting device;

an input device; and

a memory, the memory storing encrypted codeset information, unencrypted codeset information, and instructions executable by the processing device, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, cause the controlling device to:

respond to an input received via use of the input device by determining whether a command generating information is to be retrieved from the encrypted codeset information or from the unencrypted codeset information;

use the determination to retrieve the command generating information from the encrypted codeset information or the unencrypted codeset information;

provide the retrieved command generating information to a rendering engine; and

use by the rendering engine the provided command generating information to generate and transmit a command signal for transmission by the transmitting device to a target controllable device;

wherein the transmitted command is intended to control a functional operation of the target controllable device that corresponds to the received input via use of the input device and any command generating information retrieved from the encrypted codeset information is decrypted prior to provision to the rendering engine.

2. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the transmitting device comprises an infrared transmitting device.

3. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the input device comprises a hard key.

4. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the unencrypted codeset information comprises a compressed format block having first data fields that each describe, via use of an alphabet, an input element of the controlling device and second data fields that each describe, via use of the alphabet, at least one function that is to be performed by an intended target controllable device in response to an activation of the input element.

5. The controlling device as recited in claim 4 , wherein the compressed format block further has a third data field that describes, via use of the alphabet, a type for the intended target controllable device.

6. The controlling device as recited in claim 5 , wherein the compressed format block further has a fourth data field that describes, via use of the alphabet, a brand for the intended target controllable device.

7. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the encrypted codeset information comprises a compressed format block having first data fields that each describe, via use of an alphabet, an input element of the controlling device and second data fields that each describe, via use of the alphabet, at least one function that is to be performed by an intended target controllable device in response to an activation of the input element.

8. The controlling device as recited in claim 5 , wherein the compressed format block further has a third data field that describes, via use of the alphabet, a type for the intended target controllable device.

9. The controlling device as recited in claim 8 , wherein the compressed format block further has a fourth data field that describes, via use of the alphabet, a brand for the intended target controllable device.
