Abstract

A vehicle battery charger and a vehicle battery charging system are described and illustrated, and can include a controller enabling a user to enter a time of day at which the vehicle battery charger or system begins and/or ends charging of the vehicle battery. The vehicle battery charger can be separate from the vehicle, can be at least partially integrated into the vehicle, can include a transmitter and/or a receiver capable of communication with a controller that is remote from the vehicle and vehicle charger, and can be controlled by a user or another party (e.g., a power utility) to control battery charging based upon a time of day, cost of power, or other factors.

Claims (30)

1. A system for charging a battery of a vehicle, the system comprising:

a battery charger having an electrical power cord releasably attachable to at least one of the vehicle and a source of power;

a controller electrically coupled to the electrical power cord; and

at least one of a group consisting of a transmitter and a receiver electrically coupled to the controller;

a portable controller remote from the vehicle and battery charger, the portable controller configured to wirelessly communicate with the controller of the battery charger via the at least one of the group consisting of the transmitter and the receiver of the battery charger; and

a display configured to display, while charging of the battery is in progress, a cost of power per unit of power to the battery charger and a selection mechanism selectable by a user to stop the in-progress charging of the battery.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is electrically coupled to the controller of the battery charger.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller of the battery charger is located in a housing of the battery charger located along the electrical power cord.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the controller of the battery charger is further configured to communicate with a third controller remote from the vehicle and battery charger; and

the cost of power to the battery charger is received by the controller of the battery charger from the third controller.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the portable controller is further configured to communicate with a third controller remote from the vehicle and battery charger; and

the cost of power to the battery charger is received by the portable controller from the third controller.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is further configured to display a level of charge of the battery.

7. A method of charging a battery of a vehicle, the method comprising:

connecting an electrical power cord of a vehicular battery charger to at least one of the vehicle and a source of power;

establishing wireless communication between a controller of the vehicular battery charger and a portable controller of a user remote from the vehicle and the vehicular battery charger;

receiving a cost of power per unit of power to the battery charger for a current charging session at the portable controller;

displaying, while a manual charge or a programed charge of the battery is in progress, the cost of power per unit of power to the battery charger and a selection mechanism selectable by a user to stop the in-progress charging of the battery on a display;

sending a wireless signal from the portable controller to the controller of the vehicular battery charger to begin charging the battery of the vehicle; and

supplying electricity from the source of power to the battery of the vehicle responsive to the wireless signal from the portable controller.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein displaying the cost of power to the battery charger comprises displaying the cost of power to the battery on a display electrically coupled to the controller of the vehicular battery charger.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein receiving the cost of power to the battery charger comprises receiving the cost of power from a third controller remote from the vehicle, the vehicle battery charger, and the portable controller.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the controller of the vehicular battery charger is located in a housing of the vehicular battery charger located along the electrical power cord.

11. The method of claim 7 , further comprising displaying a level of charge of the battery on the display.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising continuously updating the level of charge of the battery on the display.

13. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

receiving an updated cost of power to the battery charger at the portable controller; and

automatically displaying the updated cost of power to the battery charger on the display.
