Abstract

A mapping system is disclosed that provides route guidance in the form of a map and verbal or textual directions which includes reference to both landmarks and personal contacts. Landmarks and contacts can be rated for suitability in providing route guidance. Depending on the rating, guidance using landmarks or personal contacts can be preferentially used in place of or to supplement guidance based on the underlying road network.

Claims (40)

1. A system comprising:

at least one hardware processor; and

a non-transitory machine-readable medium having instructions stored thereon which when read and executed by the at least one hardware processor cause the at least one hardware processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request for route guidance information for navigating from an origin location to a destination location;

generating route guidance information based on the request, the route guidance information comprising a map of a geographical area corresponding to a route from the origin location to the destination location, the generating of the route guidance information comprising:

selecting a subset of landmarks of a common type from a group of landmarks of the common type that are within the geographical area corresponding to the route;

including the selected subset of landmarks of the common type in the map; and

omitting any landmarks in the group that were not selected from inclusion in the map; and

causing the generated route guidance information to be displayed within a user interface on a computing device of a user.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the subset of landmarks consists of only one landmark of the common type.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the subset of landmarks consists of a plurality of landmarks of the common type, the plurality of landmarks of the common type being less than all of the landmarks in the group of landmarks of the common type.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the common type comprises a common business type.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the common type comprises a common structural type.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the selecting of the subset of landmarks of the common type from the group of landmarks of the common type is based on a corresponding indication of usefulness for each landmark in the subset of landmarks, each corresponding indication of usefulness indicating a usefulness of the corresponding landmark for route guidance, and each corresponding indication of usefulness being accessed from a database in which the corresponding indication of usefulness is stored in association with the corresponding landmark.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the causing the generated route guidance to be displayed comprises causing at least a portion of the route from the origin location to the destination location to be displayed on the map.

8. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by a computer system having a memory and at least one hardware processor, a request for route guidance information for navigating from an origin location to a destination location;

generating, by the computer system, route guidance information based on the request, the route guidance information comprising a map of a geographical area corresponding to a route from the origin location to the destination location, the generating of the route guidance information comprising:

selecting, by the computer system, a subset of landmarks of a common type from a group of landmarks of the common type that are within the geographical area corresponding to the route;

including the selected subset of landmarks of the common type in the map; and

omitting any landmarks in the group that were not selected from inclusion in the map; and

causing, by the computer system, the generated route guidance information to be displayed within a user interface on a computing device of a user.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the subset of landmarks consists of only one landmark of the common type.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the subset of landmarks consists of a plurality of landmarks of the common type, the plurality of landmarks of the common type being less than all of the landmarks in the group of landmarks of the common type.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the common type comprises a common business type.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the common type comprises a common structural type.

The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the selecting of the subset of landmarks of the common type from the group of landmarks of the common type is based on a corresponding indication of usefulness for each landmark in the subset of landmarks, each corresponding indication of usefulness indicating a usefulness of the corresponding landmark for route guidance, and each corresponding indication of usefulness being accessed from a database in which the corresponding indication of usefulness is stored in association with the corresponding landmark.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the causing the generated route guidance to be displayed comprises causing at least a portion of the route from the origin location to the destination location to be displayed on the map.

15. A non-transitory machine-readable medium having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by at least one hardware processor, cause the at least one hardware processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request for route guidance information for navigating from an origin location to a destination location;

generating route guidance information based on the request, the route guidance information comprising a map of a geographical area corresponding to a route from the origin location to the destination location, the generating of the route guidance information comprising:

selecting a subset of landmarks of a common type from a group of landmarks of the common type that are within the geographical area corresponding to the route;

including the selected subset of landmarks of the common type in the map; and

omitting any landmarks in the group that were not selected from inclusion in the map; and

causing the generated route guidance information to be displayed within a user interface on a computing device of a user.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the subset of landmarks consists of only one landmark of the common type.

17. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the subset of landmarks consists of a plurality of landmarks of the common type, the plurality of landmarks of the common type being less than all of the landmarks in the group of landmarks of the common type.

18. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the common type comprises a common business type or a common structural type.

The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the selecting of the subset of landmarks of the common type from the group of landmarks of the common type is based on a corresponding indication of usefulness for each landmark in the subset of landmarks, each corresponding indication of usefulness indicating a usefulness of the corresponding landmark for route guidance, and each corresponding indication of usefulness being accessed from a database in which the corresponding indication of usefulness is stored in association with the corresponding landmark.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the causing the generated route guidance to be displayed comprises causing at least a portion of the route from the origin location to the destination location to be displayed on the map.
