Abstract

A distributed energy resource (DER) may store electrical power from an AC circuit and discharge stored electrical power to the AC circuit. A DER may be coupled to the AC circuit via a plug inserted into a receptacle coupled to the AC circuit, and a load device may be plugged into the DER via a receptacle of the DER. The DER may pass AC power from the AC circuit to the load device, and may draw additional power from the AC circuit to charge an energy storage circuit of the DER. The DER may also discharge stored energy into the AC circuit and/or power the load device directly.

Claims (35)

1. An electrical energy system comprising:

a rechargeable battery;

a dc/ac converter configured to receive a DC voltage from the battery and convert the received DC voltage for receipt by an external AC circuit;

one or more controllers configured to designate operation state of the battery in at least a charge state, a discharge state, and an idle state, the one or more controllers further configured to designate a mode of operation of the dc/ac converter, the mode of operation including at least a discharge mode where stored electrical energy in the battery is converted to an AC voltage compatible with and for receipt by the external AC circuit; and

a plug, the plug configured to receive AC voltage from the converter and convey the AC voltage to the external AC circuit,

wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to designate the discharge mode of operation of the converter during a first electrical load period of time of the external AC circuit and to not designate the discharge mode of operation during a second electrical load period of time of the external AC circuit, wherein a first electrical load during the first electrical load period of time is greater than the second electrical load during the second electrical load period of time.

2. The electrical energy system of claim 1 wherein the first electrical load period is a load period for an electrical utility; and second electrical load period is a load period for the electrical utility.

3. The electrical energy system of claim 1 wherein the one or more controllers designate the operational state of the battery after receiving an electrical load instruction from an electrical utility.

4. The electrical energy system of claim 1 wherein the one or more controllers designate the discharge mode of operation of the converter after receiving an electrical load instruction from an electrical utility.

5. The electrical energy system of claim 1 wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to receive pricing information for an electrical utility during different periods of time of a day and to designate the mode of operation of the converter and the operational state of the battery using the received pricing information.

6. The electrical energy system of claim 1 wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to designate the mode of operation of the converter and the operational state of the battery using an instruction from an electrical utility.

7. The electrical energy system of claim 1 wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to designate the mode of operation of the converter and the operational state of the battery using a measurement or instruction from a distributed renewable energy source.

8. The electrical energy system of claim 7 wherein the distributed renewable energy source is a solar array and wherein the external AC circuit is an AC power grid.

9. An electrical energy apparatus comprising:

a rechargeable battery;

a dc/ac converter electrically connected to the rechargeable battery, the dc/ac converter configured to receive a DC voltage from the battery and convert the received DC voltage for receipt by an external AC circuit;

one or more controllers electrically connected to the dc/ac converter and the rechargeable battery, the one or more controllers configured to designate operation state of the battery in at least a charge state, a discharge state, and an idle state, the one or more controllers further configured to designate a mode of operation of the dc/ac converter, the mode of operation including at least a discharge mode where stored electrical energy in the battery is converted to an AC voltage compatible with and for receipt by the external AC circuit; and

a plug, the plug electrically coupled to the dc/ac converter, the plug configured to receive AC voltage from the converter and convey the AC voltage to the external AC circuit,

wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to designate the discharge mode of operation of the converter during a first electrical load period of time of the external AC circuit and to not designate the discharge mode of operation during a second electrical load period of time of the external AC circuit, wherein a first electrical load during the first electrical load period of time is greater than the second electrical load during the second electrical load period of time.

10. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 9 wherein the first electrical load period is a load period for an electrical utility; and second electrical load period is a load period for the electrical utility.

11. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 9 wherein the one or more controllers designate the operational state of the battery after receiving an electrical load instruction from an electrical utility.

12. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 9 wherein the one or more controllers designate the discharge mode of operation of the converter after receiving an electrical load instruction from an electrical utility.

13. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 9 wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to receive pricing information for an electrical utility during different periods of time of a day and to designate the mode of operation of the converter and the operational state of the battery using the received pricing information.

14. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 9 wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to designate the mode of operation of the converter and the operational state of the battery using an instruction from an electrical utility.

15. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 9 wherein the one or more controllers are further configured to designate the mode of operation of the converter and the operational state of the battery using a measurement or instruction from a distributed renewable energy source.

16. The electrical energy apparatus of claim 15 wherein the distributed renewable energy source is a solar array and wherein the external AC circuit is an AC power grid.
