Abstract

A laminated load ring for a balloon assembly includes a plurality of ring stacking units stacked one on top of the other. Each of the ring stacking units can include a main body having a central opening, a plurality of arms, and at least one weld line. The plurality of arms may each extend away from the main body around a circumference of the main body. The at least one weld line can be formed on the main body. The plurality of arms of the plurality of ring stacking units may be aligned with one another. The weld line of each of the plurality of ring stacking units may be offset from the weld line of a directly adjacent ring stacking unit in a direction extending around the circumference of the laminated load ring.

Claims (25)

1. An in-process load ring unit for a balloon assembly, the in-process unit comprising:

a plurality ring stacking units stacked one on top of the other, wherein each one of the of the plurality of ring stacking units includes a main body having a central opening and an interior edge forming a periphery around the central opening; and

a plurality of gate tabs, each of the plurality of gate tabs extending away from the interior edge of each ring stacking unit, and wherein each of the plurality of gate tabs are spaced apart from a directly adjacent gate tab in a direction extending around a circumference of the in-process unit.

2. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of gate tabs are evenly spaced apart from one another.

3. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of gate tabs extend continuously from the main body.

4. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein the gate tabs have a thickness that is a same thickness as a thickness of the main body.

5. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of each ring stacking unit is at least 0.060 inches.

6. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the ring stacking units comprises from a fiber-reinforced material.

7. The in-process unit of claim 6 , wherein a majority of the fibers in each ring stacking unit are oriented in a lateral direction extending in a direction parallel to a top surface of the ring stacking unit.

8. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the ring stacking units further comprises at least one gate tab positioned within the central opening, wherein the at least one gate tab of each of the plurality of ring stacking units is offset by at least five degrees from the at least one gate tab of a directly adjacent ring stacking unit and in a direction extending around the circumference of the in-process unit.

9. The in-process unit of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesive layer between each of the plurality of ring stacking units.

10. The in-process unit of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ring stacking units is bonded together.

11. A method of forming a laminated load ring comprising:

providing a plurality of ring stacking units, each of the ring stacking units including a main body having an opening, an interior edge extending around the opening, a plurality of arms extending around an exterior edge of the ring stacking unit, and a guide line in the main body of the ring stacking unit;

stacking a second ring stacking unit of the plurality of ring stacking units on top of a first ring stacking unit; and

arranging the first and second ring stacking units so that the guide line of the second ring stacking unit is offset relative to the first ring stacking unit in a direction extending around a circumference of the ring stacking unit.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the guide lines of the plurality of ring stacking units is a weld line.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the step of providing further comprises forming a shape of the plurality of ring stacking units from an injection mold filled with a fiber-reinforced material.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein a majority of the fibers in each ring stacking unit of the plurality of ring stacking unites are oriented in a lateral direction extending in a direction parallel to a top surface of the ring stacking unit.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein each of the fibers in the fiber-reinforced material are oriented in a same direction when the injection mold is filled with the fiber reinforced material.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of arms of the second ring stacking unit are aligned with the plurality of arms of the first stacking unit, the method further comprising stacking a third ring stacking unit of the plurality of ring stacking units on top of the second ring stacking unit so that the guide line of the third ring stacking unit does not align with the guide line of the second ring stacking unit.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein each of the ring stacking units further comprises at least one gate tab positioned within the opening, wherein the arranging results in each at least one gate tab of each of the plurality of ring stacking units being offset by at least five degrees from the at least one gate tab of a directly adjacent ring stacking unit in a direction extending around the circumference of the laminated load ring.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising, bonding the plurality of ring stacking units together.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein bonding includes ultrasonic welding.

20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising placing an adhesive layer between pairs of the plurality of ring stacking units.
