Abstract

Embodiments include a system, method, and computer program product that authenticates a caller using calling party information. In an embodiment, an authentication device receives the call request and associated calling party information that includes a calling party number. The authentication device retrieves parameters associated with the calling party number, where a retrieved parameter is a number of accounts linked to the calling party number. The authentication device determines whether the number of accounts is between one and a threshold value, inclusive, and verifies that the call request originates from a location or a device associated with the calling party number. Based on the verifying and determining, the authentication device generates an authentication result that indicates whether the calling party number is authenticated. Then, the authentication device sends the authentication result to a call processing device that processes the call request from the caller according to the authentication result.

Claims (35)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

identifying, by an authentication device, a plurality of authentication results indicating whether a plurality of calling party numbers are authenticated, each calling party number associated with a call request to a called party; and

retrieving, by the authentication device, fraud information associated with a plurality of prior call requests;

determining, by the authentication device, an accuracy of the plurality of authentication results based at least in part on the fraud information; and

adjusting, by the authentication device, one or more authentication parameters used in authenticating call requests based at least in part on the determined accuracy.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results comprises determining that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is authenticated is incorrect when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is fraudulent.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results comprises determining that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is not authenticated is incorrect when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is not fraudulent.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results comprises determining that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is authenticated is correct when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is not fraudulent.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results comprises determining that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is not authenticated is correct when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is fraudulent.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results comprises determining an accuracy rate for the plurality of authentication results.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 6 , wherein adjusting the one or more authentication parameters comprises adjusting the one or more authentication parameters to increase the accuracy rate.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more authentication parameters comprise one or more thresholds used in determining the authentication result, and wherein adjusting the one or more authentication parameters comprises adjusting the one or more thresholds.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the one or more thresholds include thresholds associated with one or more of a call frequency attribute, call velocity attribute, a line type attribute of the calling party number, or a linked accounts attribute.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the fraud information comprises fraud information for one or more accounts linked to the respective calling party numbers associated with the plurality of prior call requests, and wherein the fraud information comprises at least one of: logged occurrences of fraud, associated dates of fraud, a type of fraud, a location of the fraud, a severity of the fraud, or a date or time when fraud was identified or logged.

11. An authentication device, comprising

a memory configured to store a plurality of authentication parameters;

one or more processors coupled to the memory;

a calling number authenticator that, when executing in the processor, generates a plurality of authentication results indicating whether a plurality of calling party numbers are authenticated, the plurality of authentication results determined based at least in part on at least one of the plurality of authentication parameters, each calling party number associated with a call request to a called party; and

an authentication parameter tuner that, when executing in the processor:

retrieves fraud information associated with a plurality of prior call requests;

determines an accuracy of the plurality of authentication results based at least in part on the fraud information; and

adjusts one or more of the authentication parameters based at least in part on the determined accuracy.

The authentication device of claim 11 , wherein to determine the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results, the authentication parameter tuner is configured to determine that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is authenticated is incorrect when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is fraudulent.

The authentication device of claim 11 , wherein to determine the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results, the authentication parameter tuner is configured to determine that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is not authenticated is incorrect when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is not fraudulent.

The authentication device of claim 11 , wherein to determine the accuracy of the plurality of authentication results, the authentication parameter tuner is configured to determine that an authentication result indicating that a calling party number is authenticated is correct when the fraud information indicates that the call request associated with the authentication result is not fraudulent.

15. The authentication device of claim 11 , wherein the fraud information comprises fraud information for one or more accounts linked to the respective calling party numbers associated with the plurality of prior call requests.

16. The authentication device of claim 15 , wherein the fraud information comprises at least one of: logged occurrences of fraud, associated dates of fraud, a type of fraud, a location of the fraud, a severity of the fraud, or a date or time when fraud was identified or logged.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable device having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one computing device, causes the at least one computing device to perform operations comprising:

identifying a plurality of authentication results indicating whether a plurality of calling party numbers are authenticated, each calling party number associated with a call request to a called party, the plurality of authentication results determined based at least in part on one or more authentication parameters; and

retrieving fraud information for one or more accounts linked with the respective calling party numbers;

determining an accuracy of the plurality of authentication results based at least in part on the fraud information; and

adjusting at least one of the one or more authentication parameters based at least in part on the determined accuracy.

The non-transitory computer-readable device of claim 17 , wherein the one or more authentication parameters comprise one or more thresholds used in determining the authentication result, and wherein adjusting the one or more authentication parameters comprises adjusting the one or more thresholds.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable device of claim 18 , wherein the one or more thresholds include thresholds associated with one or more of a call frequency attribute, call velocity attribute, a line type attribute of the calling party number, or a linked accounts attribute.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable device of claim 17 , wherein the fraud information comprises at least one of: logged occurrences of fraud, associated dates of fraud, a type of fraud, a location of the fraud, a severity of the fraud, or a date or time when fraud was identified or logged.
