Abstract

Systems and methods of providing post-operative ostomy patient care can include software and/or hardware that facilitates patient care personnel, such as a patient coach, providing remote patient care or coaching over a network to an ostomy patient. The care may be provided by specially trained former patients, nurses, or other care providers. The system can integrate sensor data from an ostomy device and inputs from the former patients, healthcare professionals, and/or device manufacturer in provide the post-operative care.

Claims (31)

1. A system of providing post-operative care to an ostomy patient by a non-healthcare professional, the system comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium configured to store computer-executable instructions; and

at least one hardware processor in communication with the non-transitory storage medium, wherein the at least one hardware processor is configured to:

receive and process, over a network, ostomy data, wherein the ostomy data comprises data associated with use of an ostomy device by the ostomy patient, the ostomy data including at least a stomal output measurement; transmit, over the network, the processed ostomy data to a care provider device, the care provider device being operated by the non-healthcare professional; receive an input from the non-healthcare professional via the care provider device in response to the processed ostomy data; and transmit the input to a patient device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the non-healthcare professional has worn an ostomy device for a longer period than the ostomy patient.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to receive, over the network, patient input data.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the patient input data comprises information relating to at least one of food and/or liquids consumed by the ostomy patient.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein hardware processor is further configured to generate, based on the ostomy data and the patient input data, a monitored value.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to generate an alert if the monitored value exceeds or falls below a threshold value.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to transmit the alert to the care provider device.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the input comprises a communication request from the care provider device to communicate with the patient device in response to the alert, the hardware processor further configured to transmit the communication request to the patient device and establish connection between the patient device and the care provider device.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to transmit a request to a healthcare professional by the care provider device in response to the alert.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to transmit a request to a patient treatment delivery service by the non-healthcare professional or the healthcare professional in response to the alert.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor is further configured to transmit a technical alert to a manufacturer of the ostomy device in response to the input, the input comprising a determination by the non-healthcare professional of a possible technical fault in the ostomy device.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ostomy device comprises:

an ostomy bag including one or more sensor layers disposed in, on, or between walls of the ostomy bag; and

an electronics hub configured to transmit signals associated with the one or more sensor layers.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the ostomy device comprises an ostomy wafer, the ostomy wafer including a plurality of sensors in communication with the electronics hub, the ostomy wafer including a patient facing surface and an ostomy bag facing surface that are opposite each other.

14. A method of providing post-operative care to an ostomy patient by a non-healthcare professional, the method comprising:

receiving, over a network, and processing ostomy data, wherein the ostomy data comprises data associated with use of an ostomy device by the ostomy patient, the ostomy data including at least a stomal output measurement;

transmitting, over the network, the processed ostomy data to a care provider device, the care provider device being operated by the non-healthcare professional;

receive an input from the non-healthcare professional via the care provider device in response to the processed ostomy data; and

transmit the input to a patient device.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the non-healthcare professional has worn an ostomy device for a longer period than the ostomy patient.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising receiving, over the network, patient input data.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising generating, based on the ostomy data and the patient input data, a monitored value.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising generating an alert if the monitored value exceeds or falls below a threshold value.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the input comprises a communication request from the care provider device to communicate with the patient device in response to the alert, the method further comprising transmitting the communication request to the patient device and establishing connection between the patient device and the care provider device.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising transmitting a request to a healthcare professional by the care provider device in response to the alert.

21. The method of claim 20 , further comprising transmitting a request to a patient treatment delivery service by the non-healthcare professional or the healthcare professional in response to the alert.

22. The method of claim 14 , comprising transmitting a technical alert to a manufacturer of the ostomy device in response to the input, the input comprising a determination by the non-healthcare professional of a possible technical fault in the ostomy device.
