Abstract

Systems, devices, apparatuses, components, methods, and techniques for cadence determination and media content selection are provided. An example media-playback device comprises a media-output device that plays media content items, a cadence-acquiring device, and a cadence-based media content selection engine. The cadence-acquiring device includes an accelerometer and a cadence-determination engine configured to determine a cadence based on acceleration data captured by the accelerometer. The cadence-based media content selection engine is configured to identify a media content item based on the cadence determined by the cadence-determining engine and cause the media-output device to playback the identified media content item.

Claims (51)

1. A media playback device comprising:

at least one processing device;

a display device connected to the at least one processing device; and

at least one computer readable data storage device storing software instructions that, when executed by the at least one processing device, cause the media-playback device to:

determine a stable cadence;

identify a media content item based on the determined stable cadence;

play the media content item; and

display a cadence-based content playback screen having a media content item display panel that displays the media content item being played and a cadence information message that displays information about the determined stable cadence, the cadence-based content playback screen further having a pause control that operates to receive a pause input that triggers the media playback device to pause cadence determination while continuing to play the media content item, the pause control displayed adjacent to the cadence information message.

2. The media playback device of claim 1 , wherein the media content item belongs to a playlist, and the cadence-based content playback screen includes a playlist information message that displays information about the playlist of the media content item.

3. The media playback device of claim 2 , wherein the playlist is pre-defined and has media content items corresponding to the determined stable cadence.

4. The media playback device of claim 2 , wherein the playlist is generated by the media playback device based on the determined stable cadence.

5. The media playback device of claim 1 , wherein the cadence information message displays a numeric value representing the determined stable cadence.

6. The media playback device of claim 1 , wherein the cadence-based content playback screen includes a previous media content item display panel, a current media content item display panel, and a next media content item display panel.

7. The media playback device of claim 1 , wherein the software instructions further cause the media-playback device to:

identify a second media content item based on a determined change in cadence; and

display the second media content item.

8. The media playback device of claim 7 , wherein the cadence information message displays the determined change in cadence.

9. The media playback device of claim 8 , wherein the cadence information message includes an arrow pointing up to indicate an increase in cadence and an arrow pointing down to indicate a decrease in cadence.

10. The media playback device of claim 8 , wherein the cadence information message displays a first color to indicate an increase in cadence, a second color to indicate a decrease in cadence, and a third color to indicate a stable cadence.

11. The media playback device of claim 8 , wherein the cadence information message blinks to indicate the determined change in cadence.

12. The media playback device of claim 1 , wherein the cadence information message displays a comparison between the determined stable cadence and a target cadence.

13. The media playback device of claim 1 , wherein the pause input further triggers the media playback device to pause playback of the media content item.

14. A method of cadence-based media playback comprising:

determining a stable cadence;

identifying a media content item based on the determined stable cadence;

playing the media content item;

displaying a cadence-based content playback screen having a media content item display panel that displays the media content item being played and a cadence information message that displays information about the determined stable cadence;

displaying a pause control adjacent to the cadence information message; and

receiving a pause input from the pause control displayed in the cadence information message, the pause input triggering a media playback device to pause cadence determination while continuing to play the media content item.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

monitoring for changes in cadence; and

upon detecting a change in cadence, displaying a second media content item based on the change in cadence.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

displaying an arrow pointing up to indicate an increase in cadence; and

displaying an arrow pointing down to indicate a decrease in cadence.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

displaying a first color to indicate an increase in cadence;

displaying a second color to indicate a decrease in cadence; and

displaying a third color to indicate a stable cadence.

18. A media playback device comprising:

at least one processing device;

a display device connected to the at least one processing device; and

at least one computer readable data storage device storing software instructions that, when executed by the at least one processing device, cause the media-playback device to:

determine a stable cadence;

identify a media content item based on the determined stable cadence;

play the media content item; and

display a cadence-based content playback screen having:

a media content item display panel that displays the media content item being played based on the determined stable cadence;

a cadence information message that displays information about the determined stable cadence including a first indicator to indicate an increase in cadence, a second indicator to indicate a decrease in cadence, and a third indicator to indicate a stable cadence; and

a pause control displayed adjacent to the cadence information message, the pause control operating to receive a pause input that triggers the media playback device to pause cadence determination while continuing to play the media content item.

19. The media playback device of claim 18 , wherein the media content item display panel displays a second media content item based on a determined change in cadence.
