Abstract

The present disclosure includes prosthetic devices, including implants for joints and external prosthetics. The prosthetic devices allow for full articulation of the joint, while absorbing impact of the components during normal use that will reduce wear on the device components and prolong life. The device may include a bone implantable component and a bearing component having an articulation surface that is sized and shaped to substantially mate with at least a portion of the bone implantable component and a damping mechanism that includes a contact member disposed at least primarily inside a cavity; a biasing member biasing the contact member toward an upper aperture of the cavity and means for capturing the contact member within the cavity.

Claims (20)

1. A prosthetic device, comprising:

a sock sized and shaped to situate about a residual limb, the sock having a pin located adjacent a distal end of the residual limb;

a socket sized and shaped to substantially mate with at least a portion of the residual limb, the sock, and the pin;

a damping mechanism disposed at an interface of the sock and the socket;

wherein, in use, a movement force received on the socket is partially transferred to the damping mechanism, thereby causing an alteration in the damping mechanism, the alteration resulting in at least a partial dissipation of the movement force; and

wherein:

the damping mechanism comprises an interaction component and a flexible component;

the interaction component is partially disposed inside a cavity;

the flexible component is disposed within the cavity and is configured to urge the interaction component toward an aperture in the cavity; and

the movement force is partially transferred to the interaction component thereby altering the flexible component to at least partially dissipate the movement force.

2. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor disposed at or near the interface for sensing an attribute of the movement force.

3. The prosthetic device of claim 2 , further comprising a processor in communication with the sensor and a computer memory, the computer memory comprising a program having machine readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, performs the following steps:

(a) determines the attribute of the movement force; and

(b) activates an external force, wherein the external force alters a characteristic of the three-dimensional nanoparticle in response to the attribute of the movement force.

4. The prosthetic device of claim 3 , wherein the external force is a magnetic force, an electric force, a subsonic force, an ultrasonic force, and an electromagnetic force.

5. The prosthetic device of claim 4 , further comprising a sensor disposed at or near the interface for sensing an attribute of the movement force.

6. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , further comprising a processor in communication with the sensor and a computer memory, the computer memory comprising a program having machine readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, performs the following steps:

(a) determines the attribute of the movement force; and

(b) activates an external force, wherein the external force alters a characteristic of the flexible component in response to the attribute of the movement force.

7. The prosthetic device of claim 6 , wherein the external force is a magnetic force, an electric force, a subsonic force, an ultrasonic force, and an electromagnetic force.
