Abstract

A system capable of self-adjusting both sound level and spectral content to improve audibility and intelligibility of medical device audible cues. Audible cues are stored as sound files. Ambient noise is detected, and the output of the audible cues is altered based on the ambient noise. Various embodiments include processed sound files that are more robust in noisy environments.

Claims (42)

1. A medical device configured to one or both of treat and monitor a patient, comprising:

a sound level calculation component configured to determine a sound level of an ambient environment of the medical device;

a sound spectrum analysis component configured to determine a sound spectrum of the ambient environment of the medical device;

an amplifier having an adjustable gain; and

a processor configured to:

receive the sound level of the ambient environment of the medical device from the sound level calculation component;

determine the adjustable gain for the amplifier based, at least in part, on the sound level of the ambient environment;

receive the sound spectrum of the ambient environment of the medical device from the sound spectrum analysis component;

determine a spectrum enhancement composition based, at least in part, on the sound spectrum of the ambient environment, the spectrum enhancement composition including identifying one or more frequencies masked by the ambient environment;

cause audio output from the medical device into the ambient environment to be output with the applied adjustable gain and with the spectrum enhancement composition.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is a defibrillator or a monitor-defibrillator.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is portable.

4. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a microphone configured to receive an ambient sound of the ambient environment, the sound level calculation component configured to determine the sound level of the ambient environment based on the ambient sound received by the microphone.

5. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

select an audible cue from a sound library, the audible cue selected based on one or both of the sound spectrum and the sound spectrum analysis composition; and

output the audible cue as the audio output from the medical device into the ambient environment with the applied adjustable gain.

6. The medical device of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to add harmonically related frequency content to the selected audible cue before the selected audible cue is output as the audio output from the medical device in to the ambient environment, the harmonically related frequency content including the one or more frequencies masked by the ambient environment.

7. The medical device of claim 5 , wherein the audible cue includes a loud environment audible cue and a quiet environment audible cue, and wherein the processor is further configured to select either the loud environment audible cue or the quiet environment audible cue based, at least in part, on one or both of the sound level and the sound spectrum of the ambient environment of the medical device.

8. A monitor-defibrillator configured to one or both of monitor and treat a patient, comprising:

a microphone configured to receive audio in an ambient environment of the monitor-defibrillator;

a sound level calculation component configured to determine a sound level of the ambient environment of the monitor-defibrillator based on the received audio in the ambient environment;

a sound spectrum analysis component configured to determine a sound spectrum of the received audio in the ambient environment of the medical device;

an amplifier having an adjustable gain;

a sound library having multiple audible cues, the audible cues including user instructions to operate the monitor-defibrillator; and

a processor configured to:

receive the sound level of the ambient environment of the monitor-defibrillator from the sound level calculation component;

determine a value of an ambient gain for the amplifier based, at least in part, on the ambient sound;

cause the amplifier to adjust the adjustable gain to the ambient gain value;

receive the sound spectrum of the ambient environment of the monitor-defibrillator from the sound spectrum analysis component;

select one of the multiple audible cues from the sound library based, at least in part, on the sound spectrum; and

cause the selected audible cue to be output with the ambient gain value.

9. The monitor-defibrillator of claim 8 , wherein the monitor-defibrillator is portable.

10. A method of operating a monitor-defibrillator, comprising:

determining an ambient sound level of an ambient environment of the monitor-defibrillator;

determining an ambient sound spectrum of the ambient environment of the monitor-defibrillator;

determining an adjustable gain for an amplifier configured to cause audio to be output from the medical device;

determining a spectrum enhancement composition based, at least in part, on the sound spectrum of the ambient environment, the spectrum enhancement composition including one or more frequencies not masked by the ambient environment;

causing audio to be output from the monitor-defibrillator into the ambient environment with the adjustable gain and with the spectrum enhancement composition.

11. The method of operating the monitor-defibrillator of claim 10 , further comprising:

selecting an audible cue from a sound library based on the sound spectrum analysis composition;

causing the audible cue to be output from the monitor-defibrillator into the ambient environment with the adjustable gain and with the spectrum enhancement composition.

12. The method of operating the monitor-defibrillator of claim 10 , further comprising causing harmonically related frequency content to be added to the audio output from the monitor-defibrillator before the audio is output, the harmonically related frequency including the one or more frequencies not masked by the ambient environment.
