Abstract

Vehicles such as unmanned air vehicles that are capable of movement from an open, flight configuration to an enclosed configuration in which all major flight components can be protected by an outer shell are disclosed. In the enclosed configuration, the vehicles can take on standard geometric shapes such as a rectangular prism, sphere, cylinder, or another shape, so as to not be recognizable as an unmanned air vehicle. Embodiments of vehicles can also include interchangeable and/or wireless motor arms, motor arms which are electrically connected to the remainder of the vehicle only when in an open configuration, remote controllers removably attached to the remainder of the vehicle, and clip or other attachment mechanisms for attachment to objects such as backpacks.

Claims (25)

1. An unmanned air vehicle, comprising:

a body supporting a camera; and

at least one arm including immotile landing gear configured to support the unmanned air vehicle, the at least one arm being movably connected to the body such that the unmanned air vehicle is reconfigurable between a transport configuration, in which the at least one arm is in a first position, and a flight configuration, in which the at least one arm is in a second, different position, wherein the at least one arm is generally flush with an outer surface of the body in the first position, and the at least one arm extends outwardly from the body in the second position.

2. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the landing gear is undeployed when the at least one arm is in the first position, and the landing gear is deployed when the at least one arm is in the second position.

3. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one arm and the landing gear are foldably deployable and undeployable in unison.

4. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the landing gear is movable between undeployed and deployed positions during movement of the at least one arm between the first and second positions.

5. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the camera is movably connected to the body.

6. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one arm is configured to support a propeller assembly.

7. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 6 , wherein the propeller assembly is reconfigurable between a first configuration when the at least one arm is in the first position, and a second, different configuration when the at least one arm is in the second position.

8. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the propeller assembly is configured for storage when the propeller assembly is in the first configuration, and the propeller assembly is configured for flight when the propeller assembly is in the second configuration.

9. An unmanned air vehicle, comprising:

a body supporting a camera;

at least one arm including immotile landing gear configured to support the unmanned air vehicle, the at least one arm being connected to the body for movement between a first position, in which the at least one arm is generally flush with an outer surface of the body, and a second position, in which the at least one arm extends outwardly from the body; and

a propeller assembly supported by the at least one arm, the propeller assembly being reconfigurable between an inactive configuration and an active configuration.

10. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the unmanned air vehicle is in a transport configuration when the at least one arm is in the first position, and the unmanned air vehicle is in a flight configuration when the at least one arm is in the second position.

11. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the landing gear is arranged for deployment when the unmanned air vehicle is in the flight configuration.

12. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the landing gear is movable between undeployed and deployed positions during movement of the unmanned air vehicle between the transport and flight configurations.

13. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the propeller assembly is configured for storage when the propeller assembly is in the inactive configuration, and the propeller assembly is configured for flight when the propeller assembly is in the active configuration.

14. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 13 , wherein the propeller assembly is positionable in the inactive configuration when the unmanned air vehicle is in the transport configuration, and the propeller assembly is positionable in the active configuration when the unmanned air vehicle is in the flight configuration.

15. The unmanned air vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the landing gear is movable between undeployed and deployed positions via folding of the at least one arm.

16. A method of operating an unmanned air vehicle including a camera, the method comprising:

foldably deploying arms of the unmanned air vehicle including immotile landing gear such that the landing gear is positioned to support the unmanned air vehicle, the arms being generally flush with a body of the unmanned air vehicle prior to deployment of the arms; and

driving propeller assemblies supported by the arms to cause flight of the unmanned air vehicle.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein deploying the arms includes moving the arms from first positions, in which the arms are positioned generally flush with the body of the unmanned air vehicle, to second positions, in which the arms extend outwardly from the body of the unmanned air vehicle.

18. The method of claim 16 , further including reconfiguring the propeller assemblies between inactive configurations, in which the propeller assemblies are configured for storage, and active configurations, in which the propeller assemblies are configured for flight.
