Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner comprises a main body has a driving handle and houses a suction motor and fan assembly, the suction motor and fan assembly having a suction motor axis of rotation wherein the driving handle has a hand grip portion that extends upwardly and forwardly when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end. An air treatment member has a dirt collection region having an openable door provided on a front end of the air treatment member.

Claims (37)

1. A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:

(a) a surface cleaning head having a front end, a rear end, a dirt air inlet and a cleaning head air outlet;

(b) a rigid air flow conduit having a rigid wand inlet end having an air inlet communicable with the cleaning head air outlet, a rigid wand outlet end and a longitudinally extending conduit axis, the rigid air flow conduit is moveably mountable to the surface cleaning head between an upright position and an in-use floor cleaning position in which the rigid air flow conduit extends at an angle to the vertical, the rigid wand outlet end having an air outlet and an outlet end electrical connector; and,

(c) a hand vacuum cleaner removably mountable to the rigid wand outlet end, the hand vacuum cleaner having a front end and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(i) a main body comprising an upper end, a lower end, a front end, a rear end and a driving handle, the main body housing a suction motor and fan assembly, the suction motor and fan assembly having a suction motor axis of rotation wherein the driving handle has a hand grip portion that extends upwardly and forwardly at an angle of less than 45 degrees forward from vertical when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end;

(i) an air treatment member provided at the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner, the air treatment member having a front end, a rear end and a central longitudinal axis;

(ii) an inlet passage positioned above the air treatment member when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end, the inlet passage having an inlet passage axis; and,

(iii) a hand vacuum cleaner electrical connector provided on the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner adjacent the inlet passage, the hand vacuum cleaner electrical connector is releasably connectable with the outlet end electrical connector,

wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is mounted to the rigid wand outlet end, the longitudinally extending passage axis extends in a same direction as the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member, and

wherein the suction motor axis of rotation extends in the same direction as the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member.

2. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the hand grip portion extends linearly outwardly from a sidewall of the main body.

3. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 2 wherein the hand grip portion extends linearly outwardly from a portion of the main body that houses the suction motor and fan assembly.

4. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the rigid air flow conduit is removably mounted to the surface cleaning head.

5. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the inlet passage axis intersects the hand grip portion.

6. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the handle and the suction motor and fan assembly are each positioned rearward of the air treatment member.

7. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein, the air treatment member has an openable front face.

8. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the air treatment member has a front face and the hand vacuum cleaner electrical connector is positioned forward of the front face.

9. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the air treatment member has a front face and the hand vacuum cleaner electrical connector is positioned adjacent the front face.

10. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the main body further comprises a finger receiving area positioned between the driving handle and a portion of the main body.

11. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 10 wherein the finger receiving area is provided between the driving handle and the air treatment member.

The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the rear end of the air treatment member has a rear cross-sectional area in a plane transverse to the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member and the front end air treatment member has a front cross-sectional area in a plane transverse to the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member and the front cross-sectional area is the same as the rear cross-sectional area.

13. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 12 wherein the air treatment member has an openable front face.

14. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 13 wherein the openable front face opens all of the front cross-sectional area of the air treatment member.

15. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the air treatment member comprises a cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber exterior to the cyclone chamber.

16. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the air treatment member comprises a cyclone chamber.

17. A surface cleaning apparatus comprising:

(a) a surface cleaning head having a front end, a rear end, a dirt air inlet and a cleaning head air outlet;

(b) a rigid air flow conduit having a rigid wand inlet end having an air inlet communicable with the cleaning head air outlet, a rigid wand outlet end and a longitudinally extending conduit axis, the rigid air flow conduit is moveably mountable to the surface cleaning head between an upright position and an in-use floor cleaning position in which the rigid air flow conduit extends at an angle to the vertical, the rigid wand outlet end having an air outlet and an outlet end electrical connector; and,

(c) a hand vacuum cleaner removably mountable to the rigid wand outlet end, the hand vacuum cleaner having a front end and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(i) a main body comprising an upper end, a lower end, a front end, a rear end and a driving handle, the main body housing a suction motor and fan assembly, the suction motor and fan assembly having a suction motor axis of rotation wherein the driving handle has a hand grip portion that extends upwardly and forwardly at an angle of less than 45 degrees forward from vertical when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the upper end above the lower end;

(i) an air treatment member provided at the front end of the main body, the air treatment member having a front end, a rear end and a central longitudinal axis;

(ii) an inlet passage spaced from the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member in a direction transverse to the central longitudinal axis, the inlet passage having an inlet passage axis; and,

(iii) a hand vacuum cleaner electrical connector provided on the front end of the hand vacuum cleaner adjacent the inlet passage, the hand vacuum cleaner electrical connector is releasably connectable with the outlet end electrical connector,

wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is mounted to the rigid wand outlet end, the longitudinally extending passage axis extends in a same direction as the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member, and

wherein the suction motor axis of rotation extends in the same direction as the central longitudinal axis of the air treatment member.

18. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 17 wherein the air treatment member comprises a cyclone chamber.

19. The surface cleaning apparatus of claim 1 wherein the hand grip portion extends outwardly from a sidewall of the main body.
