Abstract

A near eye display (NED) includes an electronic display configured to output image light. Further, the NED includes an eye tracking module and multiple optical elements that are combined to form an optical system to allow for changes in position of one or both eyes of a user of the NED. Various types of such optical elements, which may have optical states that are switchable, may be used to steer a light beam toward the user's eye. A direction of the steering may be based on eye tracking information measured by the eye tracking module.

Claims (40)

1. An optical system, comprising:

an eye tracking module configured to determine eye position information;

a control module configured to determine a first direction for steering light based on the eye position information;

a first optical module including a switchable polarization-sensitive element configured to direct light incident on the first optical module into the first direction; and

a viewing optical system including a reflective grating for directing light from an image source toward the first optical module in directions that include a direction that is non-perpendicular to the first optical module.

2. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein

the first optical module includes a plurality of grating layers; and

each grating layer included in the plurality of grating layers is configured to be individually switched on or switched off so that the light incident on the first optical module is directed into the first direction by causing one or more grating layers of the plurality of grating layers to switch on or to switch off.

3. The optical system of claim 2 , wherein each grating layer of the plurality of grating layers is configured to steer light incident on the grating layer by an angle that is distinct from steering angles of the other grating layers of the plurality of grating layers.

4. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the control module is further configured to transmit an electronic signal to the first optical module causing the first optical module to scan through multiple directions for directing the light incident on the first optical module.

5. The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising the image source positioned off an optical axis of the first optical module, the image source configured to generate the light incident on the first optical module.

6. The optical system of claim 1 , further comprising the viewing optical system configured to reflect the light from the image source toward the first optical module.

7. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical module includes one or more electronically switchable liquid crystal (LC) cells that are configured to selectively provide half-wave phase retardance for modifying a polarization of the light incident on the first optical module.

8. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the first direction corresponds to a location of a pupil of an eye of a user of the optical system.

9. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical module comprises multiple layers of liquid crystals, and at least one layer of liquid crystals applies a phase shift to the light incident on the first optical module across an area of the layer of liquid crystals.

10. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical module comprises a Pancharatnam-Berry Phase (PBP) grating.

11. The optical system of claim 10 , wherein

the PBP grating is a switchable grating, or

the PBP grating is a passive grating, and the first optical module includes a switchable half-wave plate optically coupled with the passive PBP grating.

12. The optical system of claim 10 , wherein the first optical module includes a plurality of grating layers, each grating layer included in the plurality of grating layers includes a PBP grating configured to have a predefined steering angle that is distinct from a steering angle of any other PBP grating included in the plurality of grating layers.

13. The optical system of claim 1 , wherein the first optical module comprises a switchable Bragg grating (SBG).

14. The optical system of claim 13 , wherein the first optical module includes a plurality of grating layers, each grating layer included in the plurality of grating layers includes a SBG configured to have a predefined steering angle that is distinct from a steering angle of any other SBG included in the plurality of grating layers.

15. The optical system of claim 13 , wherein the SBG includes a transmissive mode SBG.

16. The optical system of claim 13 , wherein the SBG includes a reflective mode SBG.

17. A near-eye display device, comprising:

an image source configured to generate image light; and

the optical system of claim 1 .

18. The near-eye display device of claim 17 , wherein

the first optical module comprises a plurality of grating layers; and

each grating layer included in the plurality of grating layers is configured to be individually switched on or switched off so that causing one or more grating layers included in the plurality of grating layers to switch on or to switch off directs the image light incident on the first optical module to the first direction.

19. An optical system, comprising:

an eye tracking module configured to determine eye position information;

a control module;

a first optical module including a first switchable polarization-sensitive element with a first plurality of grating layers; and

a second optical module including a second switchable polarization-sensitive element with a second plurality of grating layers, the second optical module having a steering axis that is substantially perpendicular to a steering axis of the first optical module, wherein the control module is configured to determine, based on the eye position information, a first direction for steering light incident on the first optical module and a second direction for steering light incident on the second optical module.

20. A method for steering light, comprising:

determining an eye position associated with an eye to which an image is to be presented;

determining, based, at least in part, on the eye position, a steer direction for directing image light associated with the image toward the eye;

directing, with a viewing optical system including a reflective grating, the image light from an image source toward an optical module in directions that include a direction that is non-perpendicular to the optical module; and

transmitting an electronic signal corresponding to the steer direction to the optical module configured to direct the image light into the steer direction.
