Abstract

A set of media playback and device settings data from each home appliance of a first set of home appliances is stored on a central server and/or sent to a remote control device upon initiation of a suspend command by a user. The stored media and devices states may be used at a later time to control the first set of home appliances, or a user may, after relocating to a second set of home appliances, initiate a resume state command whereupon media playback and device settings data from the central server and/or remote control device controls each home appliance in the second set of home appliances to bring about the same or substantially similar media and device states as in the first set of home appliances.

Claims (16)

1. A controlling device, comprising:

a processing device;

a command transmitter; and

a memory storing instructions executable by the processing device, wherein the instructions, when executed by the processing device, cause the controlling device to cause a one of a plurality of states for a home entertainment system comprised of a plurality of appliances to be identified within a repository of home entertainment system state data as a function of a metadata that is indicative of at least of one of a content genre, a content rating, and a content category of a media content that is being accessed from a media source and to automatically transmit, via use of the command transmitter, a sequence of commands to cause each of the plurality of appliances in the home entertainment system to be placed into a state that corresponds to the one of the plurality of states for the home entertainment system that was caused to be identified within the repository of home entertainment system state data.

2. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores the repository of home entertainment system state data.

3. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controlling device is further adapted to communicate with a central server having an associated database that stores the repository of home entertainment system state data and wherein the instructions cause the controlling device to provide to the central server the metadata and to receive from the central server an indication of the one of the plurality of states for the home entertainment system that was caused to be identified within the repository of home entertainment system state data.

4. The controlling device as recited in claim 3 , wherein the central server comprises an Internet accessible server.

5. The controlling device as recited in claim 3 , wherein a one of the plurality of appliances in the home entertainment system comprises the central server.

6. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the controlling device to use an indication of the one of the plurality of states for the home entertainment system that was caused to be identified within the repository of home entertainment system state data to dynamically generate the sequence of commands.

7. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the sequence of commands is predetermined and pre-associated with the one of the plurality of states for the home entertainment system that was caused to be identified within the repository of home entertainment system state data.

8. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controlling device comprises the media source.

9. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controlling device is adapted to communicate with a central server having an associated database that stores the repository of home entertainment system state data and wherein the instructions cause the controlling device to provide to the central server the metadata and to receive from the central server the sequence of commands.

10. The controlling device as recited in claim 9 , wherein the central server comprises an Internet accessible server.

11. The controlling device as recited in claim 9 , wherein a one of the plurality of appliances in the home entertainment system comprises the central server.

12. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controlling device is adapted to receive the metadata from a one of the plurality of appliances in the home entertainment system.

13. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the command transmitter comprises an infrared transmitter.
