Abstract

Techniques are described for operating a display system comprising a light source and a scanning assembly. The light source includes a plurality of emitters arranged in a column and circuitry configured to drive the emitters based on image data. The scanning assembly includes a reflective surface facing the light source, the reflective surface being rotatable in at least one dimension. A control signal including periodic, non-linear pulses causes the reflective surface to rotate through a range of scan angles, thereby forming an output image based on reflection of emitted light. The image data is supplied to the light source in synchronization with the rotational movement of the reflective surface. Changes in rotation speed due to the non-linear nature of the control signal are compensated for by adjusting emission durations for different rows to provide different emission durations at different times based on changes in the linearity of the control signal.

Claims (33)

1. A display system, comprising:

a light source including a plurality of emitters arranged in a column and circuitry configured to drive the plurality of emitters based on image data, wherein each emitter of the plurality of emitters corresponds to a separate row in the column, is a same color as other emitters in the column, and is driven based on a same value of the image data, the value of the image data determining a brightness of light emitted by the emitter of the plurality of emitters;

a scanning assembly including a reflective surface facing the light source, the reflective surface being rotatable in at least one dimension; and

a controller configured to:

generate the image data;

control a rotational movement of the reflective surface using a control signal, the control signal including periodic, non-linear pulses that cause the reflective surface to rotate through a range of scan angles, thereby forming an output image based on reflection of light emitted by the plurality of emitters, wherein the rotational movement causes the reflective surface to reflect light emitted by different emitters of the plurality of emitters onto a same pixel of the output image;

supply the image data to the light source in synchronization with the rotational movement of the reflective surface; and

compensate for changes in a speed of the rotational movement, the compensating comprising adjusting emission durations for different rows in the column during emission periods of the plurality of emitters, such that a first emission duration corresponding to the control signal at a first time is different than a second emission duration corresponding to the control signal at a second time, and wherein the compensating further comprises adjusting a rate at which the image data is supplied by the controller such that less time is spent supplying the image data to drive a particular row of the column when the rotational movement is faster than when the rotational movement is slower.

2. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the control signal has a greater slope at the first time than at the second time, and wherein the first emission duration is less than the second emission duration.

3. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the emission periods include a first emission period corresponding to a more linear segment of a pulse and a second emission period corresponding to a less linear segment of the same or a different pulse, and wherein the controller is configured to apply a different emission duration control scheme for the first emission period than for the second emission period.

4. The display system of claim 3 , wherein a top portion and a bottom portion of each of the pulses corresponds to non-emission.

5. The display system of claim 3 , wherein the first emission period and the second emission period are repeated on alternating pulses.

6. The display system of claim 5 , wherein the emission periods include, for each pulse with a corresponding second emission period, a third emission period corresponding to a second less linear segment of the same pulse, and wherein the less linear segment and the second less linear segment are symmetric.

7. The display system of claim 1 , wherein the control signal causes a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) device of the scanning assembly to oscillate at a frequency determined by the pulses.

8. A method for operating a display system, comprising:

generating image data;

generating a control signal including periodic, non-linear pulses;

controlling a rotational movement of a reflective surface of a scanning assembly using the control signal, the reflective surface facing a light source and being rotatable in at least one dimension, wherein the light source includes a plurality of emitters arranged in a column and circuitry configured to drive the plurality of emitters based on the image data, wherein each emitter of the plurality of emitters corresponds to a separate row in the column, is a same color as other emitters in the column, and is driven based on a same value of the image data, the value of the image data determining a brightness of light emitted by the emitter of the plurality of emitters, wherein the pulses cause the reflective surface to rotate through a range of scan angles, thereby forming an output image based on reflection of light emitted by the plurality of emitters, and wherein the pulses cause the reflective surface to rotate such that light emitted by different emitters of the plurality of emitters is reflected onto a same pixel of the output image;

supplying the image data to the light source in synchronization with the rotational movement of the reflective surface; and

compensating for changes in a speed of the rotational movement, the compensating comprising adjusting emission durations for different rows in the column during emission periods of the plurality of emitters, such that a first emission duration corresponding to the control signal at a first time is different than a second emission duration corresponding to the control signal at a second time, and wherein the compensating further comprises adjusting a rate at which the image data is supplied to the light source for driving a particular row of the column, such that less time is spent supplying the image data when the rotational movement is faster than when the rotational movement is slower.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the compensating further comprises adjusting the rate at which the image data is supplied to the light source in correspondence with changes in emission duration.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the control signal has a greater slope at the first time than at the second time, and wherein the first emission duration is less than the second emission duration.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the emission periods include a first emission period corresponding to a more linear segment of a pulse and a second emission period corresponding to a less linear segment of the same or a different pulse, the method further comprising applying a different emission duration control scheme for the first emission period than for the second emission period.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein a top portion and a bottom portion of each of the pulses corresponds to non-emission.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising repeating the first emission period and the second emission period on alternating pulses.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the emission periods include, for each pulse with a corresponding second emission period, a third emission period corresponding to a second less linear segment of the same pulse, and wherein the less linear segment and the second less linear segment are symmetric.

15. The method of claim 8 , wherein the control signal causes a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) device of the scanning assembly to oscillate at a frequency determined by the pulses.

16. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computer system, cause the one or more processors to:
