Abstract

A supercapacitor assembly is disclosed that includes a supercapacitor enclosed within a housing. The housing may have an outer surface and may be sealed at a seal location. A barrier layer may be formed on a portion of the outer surface that is adjacent at least one of the seal location or a surface to which the supercapacitor is mounted. The barrier layer may be a high performance polymer, such as a thermoplastic polymer or a thermoset polymer.

Claims (35)

1 . A supercapacitor assembly comprising:

a housing comprising an outer surface, the housing sealed at a seal location;

a supercapacitor enclosed within the housing; and

a barrier layer formed on a portion of the outer surface that is adjacent at least one of the seal location or a surface to which the supercapacitor is mounted.

2 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer comprises a thermoplastic polymer.

3 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer comprises at least one of polyarylene sulfide, polyester, polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyketone, polyetherketone, polyamide, or polyimide.

4 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layer has a melting temperature of about 150° C. or more.

5 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a casing formed over the housing.

6 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 3 , wherein the casing comprises a potting layer.

7 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 7 , wherein the potting layer comprises at least one of a thermoset polymer and the barrier layer comprises a thermoplastic polymer.

8 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 7 , wherein the potting layer comprises at least one of epoxy or polyurethane.

9 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the supercapacitor comprises:

a current collector;

an electrode electrically coupled to the current collector; and

at least one electrical lead electrically connected with the current collector and extending through the container from an interior of the container to an exterior of the container;

wherein the at least one electrical lead extends through the container at the seal location such that the barrier layer is formed adjacent the at least one electrical lead on the outer surface of the container.

10 . The supercapacitor assembly of claim 1 , wherein the container comprises a body and a lid, and the lid is sealed to the body at the seal location such that the barrier layer is formed adjacent a seal between the body and the lid.

11 . The supercapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the supercapacitor has a capacitance ranging from about 1 F to about 1,500 F measured at a temperature of 23° C., frequency of 120 Hz, and without an applied voltage.

12 . The supercapacitor of claim 1 , wherein the supercapacitor has an operating voltage ranging from about 2 V to about 4 V.

13 . A meter for measuring a flow of a product, the meter comprising:

a substrate;

a housing sealed at a seal location on an outer surface of the housing, the housing mounted to the substrate;

a supercapacitor enclosed within the housing; and

a barrier layer formed on a portion of the outer surface of the housing that is adjacent at least one of the substrate or the seal location.

14 . The meter of claim 13 , wherein the meter is configured to measure a flow of at least one of electricity, gas, or water.

15 . The meter of claim 13 , wherein the supercapacitor comprises:

a current collector;

an electrode electrically coupled to the current collector; and

at least one electrical lead electrically connected with the current collector and extending through the container from an interior of the container to an exterior of the container;

wherein the at least one electrical lead extends through the container at the seal location such that the barrier layer is formed adjacent the at least one electrical lead.

16 . The meter of claim 13 , wherein the housing comprises a body and a lid, and the lid is sealed to the body at the seal location.

17 . The meter of claim 13 , wherein the barrier layer comprises at least one of a thermoplastic polymer or a thermoset polymer.

18 . The meter of claim 13 , wherein the barrier layer has a melting temperature of about 150° C. or more.

19 . The meter of claim 13 , wherein the barrier layer comprises at least one of polyarylene sulfide, polyester, polycarbonate, polysulfone, polyketone, polyetherketone, polyamide, or polyimide.

20 . The meter of claim 13 , further comprising a casing formed over the housing, the casing comprising a thermoset polymer, and wherein the barrier layer comprises a thermoplastic polymer.
