Abstract

An agricultural device associated with reduced tillage techniques in a field includes a frame and a separator supported by the frame. The separator is configured to form a strip of exposed soil in residual plant matter in the field. A crimping device associated with the separator is configured to at least partially crush stems of residual plant matter while maintaining the strip.

Claims (29)

1. An agricultural system, comprising:

a frame;

a separator supported by the frame and having a shield mounted in a forward position, the shield making contact with and deflecting residual plant matter in a field, the separator making rotational contact with the soil and forming a furrow in the form of a strip of exposed soil in the residual plant matter in the field; and

a crimping device positioned adjacent to the separator in a trailing position, the crimping device configured to at least partially crush stems of the residual plant matter located in or adjacent to the strip immediately after encountering the separator;

wherein the crimping device includes two segments, each segment having a respective end attached to a common supporting member, and further wherein the separator is centrally mounted to the common supporting member, each respective end of the two segments overlapping in part the shield.

2. The agricultural system of claim 1 , further comprising a planter in a trailing position relative to the separator, the planter configured to deposit seed of a primary crop in the strip in the same pass with the formation of the strip and the partially crushing of the stems.

3. The agricultural system of claim 2 , wherein the planter is further configured to cover the seed in the strip in the same pass with the formation of the strip and the partially crushing of the stems.

4. The agricultural system of claim 1 , wherein the shield has a v-shaped configuration.

5. The agricultural system of claim 4 , wherein the v-shaped configuration has a two sides extending rearwardly from a common forward point.

6. The agricultural system of claim 5 , wherein one of the two sides is longer than the one of the two sides.

7. The agricultural system of claim 1 , wherein the separator further includes a pair of overlapping disks mounted in a trailing position relative to the shield, the pair of overlapping disks being urged into rotational movement when brought into contact with the residual plant matter.

8. The agricultural system of claim 7 , wherein the pair of overlapping disks is arranged in a v-shaped configuration, each of the overlapping disks being adjacent to a respective side of the shield.

9. An agricultural system, comprising:

a frame;

a plurality of separators supported by the frame in a parallel configuration to each other, at least one separator having a shield mounted in a forward position, the shield making contact with and separating residual plant matter in a field, the separator forming a furrow in the form of a strip of exposed soil in the residual plant matter in the field; and

a plurality of crimping segments positioned in a trailing position relative to the plurality of separators, the plurality of crimping segments having at least two segments with respective ends attached to a common supporting member, the respective ends being overlapped at least in part by the shield, the plurality of crimping segments being configured to at least partially crush stems of the residual plant matter located in or adjacent to the strip immediately after encountering the separator;

wherein the at least one separator is centrally mounted to the common supporting member.

10. The agricultural system of claim 9 , further comprising a planter in a trailing position relative to the plurality of separators, the planter configured to deposit seed of a primary crop in the strip in the same pass with the formation of the strip and the partially crushing of the stems.

11. The agricultural system of claim 10 , wherein the planter is further configured to cover the seed in the strip in the same pass with the formation of the strip and the partially crushing of the stems.

12. The agricultural system of claim 9 , wherein the shield has a v-shaped configuration.

13. The agricultural system of claim 12 , wherein the v-shaped configuration has a two sides extending rearwardly from a common forward point.

14. The agricultural system of claim 13 , wherein one of the two sides is longer than the one of the two sides.

15. The agricultural system of claim 9 , the at least one separator further includes a pair of overlapping disks mounted in a trailing position relative to the shield, the pair of overlapping disks being urged into rotational movement when brought into contact with the residual plant matter.

16. The agricultural system of claim 15 , wherein the pair of overlapping disks is arranged in a v-shaped configuration, each of the overlapping disks being adjacent to a respective side of the shield.

17. An agricultural system, comprising:

a frame;

a plurality of separators supported by the frame in a parallel configuration to each other, at least one separator having a shield mounted in a forward position and a pair of overlapping disks in a trailing position, the shield making contact with and separating residual plant matter in a field, the pair of overlapping disk being urged in respective rotational movement in contact with residual plant matter resulting in clearing at least some of the residual plant matter, the plurality of separators forming respective furrows in the form of strips of exposed soil in the residual plant matter in the field; and

a plurality of crimping segments positioned in a trailing position relative to the plurality of separators, the plurality of crimping segments having at least two segments with respective ends attached to a common supporting member, the respective ends being overlapped at least in part by the shield, the plurality of crimping segments being configured to at least partially crush stems of the residual plant matter located in or adjacent to the strips of exposed soil immediately after encountering the plurality of separators;

wherein the at least one separator is centrally mounted to the common supporting member.
