Abstract

The present invention relates to a fenestrated bone graft and a method of preparing cortical bone in thin strips then fully demineralizing it to give it formed flexibility and then creating fenestrations in the cortical bone in a fashion similar to but not identical to skin grafts.

Claims (12)

1. A method of creating a fenestrated cortical bone graft comprises the steps of:

acquiring cortical bone from a rib or a tibia bone segment and cleaning the cortical bone exposing an exterior surface removing cancellous bone and exposing an interior surface;

demineralizing the bone;

removing the cancellous center;

treating the cortical bone in 1N HCL using 20 to 50 parts of 1N HCL per gram of bone for a predetermined time of 1 to 3 hours for a rib bone and 4 to 6 hours for a tibia bone to achieve flexibility;

washing in washing solution;

passing or otherwise cutting fenestrations forming the fenestrations in the exterior surface extending through to the interior surface of the cortical bone, the fenestrations being uniformly spaced longitudinally along the cortical bone in an oblong shape configured to entrap bone particles;

freeze drying;

packing sterilely.

2. The method of creating a fenestrated cortical bone graft of claim 1 further comprises:

cutting the cortical bone longitudinally along the length allowing the graft to be formed as a flat construct or maintaining the graft as a cylinder.

3. The method of creating a fenestrated cortical bone graft of claim 2 further comprising cutting the cortical bone into strips.
