Abstract

In an exemplary embodiment, a phased array antenna comprises multiple subcircuits in communication with multiple radiating elements. The radio frequency signals are independently adjusted for both polarization control and beam steering. In a receive embodiment, multiple RF signals of various polarizations are received and combined into at least one receive beam output. In a transmit embodiment, at least one transmit beam input is divided and transmitted through multiple radiating elements, with the transmitted beams having various polarizations. In an exemplary embodiment, the phased array antenna provides multi-beam formation over multiple operating frequency bands. The wideband nature of the active components allows for operation over multiple frequency bands simultaneously.

Claims (23)

1. A phased array integrated circuit (IC) comprising:

a first, a second, a third and a fourth subcircuit, each comprising:

an intermediate port;

a splitter/combiner comprising a first port coupled to the intermediate port, and further comprising a second port and a third port;

a first vector generator to adjust a corresponding first signal communicated between the second port of the splitter/combiner and a first port of a corresponding dual-polarized radiating element; and

a second vector generator to adjust a corresponding second signal communicated between the third port of the splitter/combiner and a second port of the corresponding dual-polarized radiating element;

a common port; and

a 4:1 splitter/combiner network to connect the common port to the intermediate port of each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit.

2. The phased array IC of claim 1 , wherein the 4:1 splitter/combiner network divides an input signal from the common port into a corresponding divided signal provided to the first port of the splitter/combiner of each of the first, the second, the third, and the fourth subcircuit.

3. The phased array IC of claim 2 , wherein the splitter/combiner of each of the first, the second, the third, and the fourth subcircuit divides the corresponding divided signal into the corresponding first signal and the corresponding second signal.

4. The phased array IC of claim 1 , wherein the 4:1 splitter/combiner network combines a corresponding combined signal received from the first port of the splitter/combiner of each of the first, the second, the third, and the fourth subcircuit into an output signal provided to the common port.

5. The phased array IC of claim 4 , wherein the splitter/combiner of each of the first, the second, the third, and the fourth subcircuit combines the corresponding first signal and the corresponding second signal into the corresponding combined signal.

6. The phased array IC of claim 1 , wherein the first port and second port, of each of the corresponding dual-polarized radiating elements, are spatially orthogonal to each other.

7. The phased array IC of claim 1 , wherein the first port of each of the corresponding dual-polarized radiating elements, is associated with a first polarization, and wherein the second port of each of the corresponding dual-polarized radiating elements, is associated with a second polarization.

8. The phased array IC of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vector generators of each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit control a polarization of the corresponding dual-polarized radiating element.

9. The phased array IC of claim 1 , further comprising a digital control device to communicate commands to each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit.

10. The phased array IC of claim 9 , wherein each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit further comprise:

a first digital-to-analog converter responsive to the commands to control the first vector generator to adjust the corresponding first signal; and

a second digital-to-analog converter responsive to the commands to control the second vector generator to adjust the corresponding second signal.

11. The phased array IC of claim 9 , wherein the commands to each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit control polarization of the corresponding dual-polarized radiating element via the first and the second vector generators.

12. The phased array IC of claim 9 , wherein the commands to each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit steer at least one beam of the adjusted corresponding first signal and the adjusted corresponding second signal of each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit.

13. The phased array IC of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vector generators of each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit adjust phase and amplitude of the corresponding first signal and the corresponding second signal respectively.

14. The phased array IC of claim 13 , wherein the first and second vector generators of each of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit adjust the phase and the amplitude of the corresponding first signal and the corresponding second signal independently of others of the first, the second, the third and the fourth subcircuit.
