Abstract

In one embodiment, a generator includes a rotor configured to rotate in cooperation with a stator to generate electrical power. An exciter of the generator includes at least one circuit board, a stationary exciter stator, and a control circuit. The circuit board is mechanically coupled to a rotor of the generator and includes at least one coil of an electrical conductor. The stationary exciter stator is configured to induce a current in the at least one coil of the at least one circuit board. The control circuit is configured to modify the current from the at least one coil and provide the modified current to a field of the generator.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a forward portion of a stator housing;

a rear portion of the stator housing;

a circuit board movable with response to a rotor shaft; and

an alignment device configured to position the circuit board between the forward portion of the stator housing and the rear portion of the stator housing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the alignment device includes one or more springs for applying a force between the circuit board and the rotor shaft or a bearing associated with the rotor shaft.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising:

a mechanical switch configured to adjust a position of the circuit board.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the alignment device includes a pneumatic device for applying a force to the circuit board.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the alignment device includes a magnetic device for applying a force to the circuit board.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board includes a generator controller configured to generate a field current setting.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the circuit board includes a plurality of traces for exciter windings to induce a field current according to the field current setting.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the generator controller is configured to analyze sensor data for a magnetic field to calculate the field current setting.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the circuit board is a first circuit board, the apparatus further comprising:

a second circuit board, wherein the first circuit board corresponds to a first phase of a multiphase output and the second circuit board corresponds to a second phase of the multiphase output.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a flux shaping component configured to provide a path for magnetic flux received at the circuit board.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the alignment device includes a movable axial support device.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising:

a torque transfer device coupled to the movable axial support device that moves axially with respect to the rotor shaft so that the circuit board moves parallel to the rotor shaft.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the torque transfer device includes floating pins that are mated with the rotor shaft and move relative to the rotor shaft.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first flux supply coupled to the forward portion of the stator housing; and

a second flux supply coupled to the rear portion of the stator housing.

15. A method comprising:

supporting a printed circuit board between a forward portion of a stator housing and a rear portion of the stator housing; and

adjusting a position of the circuit board with respect to a rotor shaft using an alignment device while maintaining a rotational connection to the rotor shaft.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the alignment device includes one or more springs for applying a force between the circuit board and a rotor shaft or a bearing associated with the rotor shaft.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the alignment device includes a pneumatic device or a magnetic device for applying a force to the circuit board.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

analyzing, at a generator controller, sensor data for a magnetic field; and

calculating, at the generator controller, a field current setting in response to the analysis.

19. A generator comprising:

a forward portion of a stator housing;

a rear portion of the stator housing;

a circuit board including movable with response to a rotor shaft;

a generator controller coupled to the circuit board; and

an alignment device configured to position the circuit board between the forward portion of the stator housing and the rear portion of the stator housing.

20. The generator of claim 19 , wherein the generator controller is configured to analyze sensor data for a magnetic field to calculate a field current setting.
