Abstract

A two-part bioactive agent delivery system, the system including a disposable part comprising an agent reservoir, a bolus chamber, the volume of the bolus chamber being less than the volume of the agent reservoir, an agent outlet, and a valve having a first position communicating the agent reservoir with the bolus chamber and a second position communicating the bolus chamber with the outlet; and a reusable part including a valve driver, a power source and control electronics, the control electronics being adapted to control the valve driver to actuate the valve to deliver bioactive agent from the agent reservoir to the agent outlet; the system further having a spring extending between the agent reservoir piston and a surface of the reusable part or of the disposable part to pressurize the agent reservoir when the spring is compressed and the agent reservoir contains a quantity of bioactive agent.

Claims (98)

1. A two-part bioactive agent delivery system, the system comprising:

a disposable part comprising:

an agent reservoir,

a bolus chamber,

a piston movably disposed in the agent reservoir, the piston configured to transfer a bioactive agent from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber, and

a transdermal patch in fluid connection with the bolus chamber and configured to transdermally deliver the bioactive agent to a user;

a reusable part comprising a power source and control electronics, the control electronics configured to deliver the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch;

a spring extending from the piston, the spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the disposable part is connected to the reusable part and the agent reservoir contains the bioactive agent; and

a solvent recovery element configured to receive gaseous phase solvent from the transdermal patch.

2. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a valve between the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber, the valve configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber.

3. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 2 , wherein the valve is further configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

4. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 2 , wherein the valve is a rotatable valve having a range of motion between 60° and 90°.

5. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a second piston movably disposed in the bolus chamber, the second piston configured to transfer a bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

6. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 5 , further comprising a second spring extending from the second piston, the second spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the bioactive agent is in the bolus chamber.

7. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 6 , the second piston configured to move and load the second spring when pressurized the bioactive agent enters the bolus chamber from the agent reservoir through a valve.

8. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the transdermal patch comprises a polypropylene membrane.

9. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a connection indicator operatively connected to the control electronics to provide an indication that the reusable part has been connected to the disposable part.

10. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the spring is disposed in the disposable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

11. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the spring is disposed in the reusable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

12. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a vapor permeable barrier in the disposable part adjacent to the transdermal patch.

13. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber are configured to contain the bioactive agent and a solvent solution comprising alcohol and water.

14. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 13 , wherein the solvent solution has a ratio of water to alcohol of about 40:60 to about 60:40.

15. A two-part bioactive agent delivery system, the system comprising:

a disposable part comprising:

an agent reservoir,

a bolus chamber,

a piston movably disposed in the agent reservoir, the piston configured to transfer a bioactive agent from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber, and

a transdermal patch in fluid connection with the bolus chamber and configured to transdermally deliver the bioactive agent to a user, wherein the transdermal patch comprises a polypropylene membrane;

a reusable part comprising a power source and control electronics, the control electronics configured to deliver the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch; and

a spring extending from the piston, the spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the disposable part is connected to the reusable part and the agent reservoir contains the bioactive agent.

16. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , further comprising a valve between the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber, the valve configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber.

17. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 16 , wherein the valve is further configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

18. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 17 , wherein the valve is a rotatable valve having a range of motion between 60° and 90°.

19. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , further comprising a second piston movably disposed in the bolus chamber, the second piston configured to transfer the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

20. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 19 , further comprising a second spring extending from the second piston, the second spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the bioactive agent is in the bolus chamber.

21. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 20 , the second piston configured to move and load the second spring when pressurized the bioactive agent enters the bolus chamber from the agent reservoir through a valve.

22. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , further comprising a connection indicator operatively connected to the control electronics to provide an indication that the reusable part has been connected to the disposable part.

23. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the spring is disposed in the disposable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

24. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the spring is disposed in the reusable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

25. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , further comprising a vapor permeable barrier in the disposable part adjacent to the transdermal patch.

26. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 15 , wherein the agent reservoir and bolus chamber are configured to contain the bioactive agent and a solvent solution comprising alcohol and water.

27. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 26 , wherein the solvent solution has a ratio of water to alcohol of about 40:60 to about 60:40.

28. A two-part bioactive agent delivery system, the system comprising:

a disposable part comprising:

an agent reservoir,

a bolus chamber,

a piston movably disposed in the agent reservoir, the piston configured to transfer a bioactive agent from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber,

a transdermal patch in fluid connection with the bolus chamber and configured to transdermally deliver the bioactive agent to a user, and

a vapor permeable barrier adjacent to the transdermal patch;

a reusable part comprising a power source and control electronics, the control electronics configured to deliver the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch; and

a spring extending from the piston, the spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the disposable part is connected to the reusable part and the agent reservoir contains the bioactive agent.

29. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 28 , further comprising a valve between the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber, the valve configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber.

30. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 29 , wherein the valve is further configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

31. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 29 , wherein the valve is a rotatable valve having a range of motion between 60° and 90°.

32. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 28 , further comprising a second piston movably disposed in the bolus chamber, the second piston configured to transfer the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

33. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 32 , further comprising a second spring extending from the second piston, the second spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the bioactive agent is in the bolus chamber.

34. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 33 , the second piston configured to move and load the second spring when pressurized the bioactive agent enters the bolus chamber from the agent reservoir through a valve.

35. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 28 , further comprising a connection indicator operatively connected to the control electronics to provide an indication that the reusable part has been connected to the disposable part.

36. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 28 , wherein the spring is disposed in the disposable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

37. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 28 , wherein the spring is disposed in the reusable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

38. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 28 , wherein the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber are configured to contain the bioactive agent and a solvent solution comprising alcohol and water.

39. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 38 , wherein the solvent solution has a ratio of water to alcohol of about 40:60 to about 60:40.

40. A two-part bioactive agent delivery system, the system comprising:

a disposable part comprising:

an agent reservoir,

a bolus chamber, wherein the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber are configured to contain a bioactive agent and a solvent solution comprising alcohol and water;

a piston movably disposed in the agent reservoir, the piston configured to transfer the bioactive agent from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber, and

a transdermal patch in fluid connection with the bolus chamber and configured to transdermally deliver the bioactive agent to a user;

a reusable part comprising a power source and control electronics, the control electronics configured to deliver the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch; and

a spring extending from the piston, the spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the disposable part is connected to the reusable part and the agent reservoir contains the bioactive agent.

41. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , further comprising a valve between the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber, the valve configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber.

42. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , wherein the valve is further configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

43. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , wherein the valve is a rotatable valve having a range of motion between 60° and 90°.

44. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , further comprising a second piston movably disposed in the bolus chamber, the second piston configured to transfer the bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

45. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 44 , further comprising a second spring extending from the second piston, the second spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the bioactive agent is in the bolus chamber.

46. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 45 , the second piston configured to move and load the second spring when pressurized the bioactive agent enters the bolus chamber from the agent reservoir through a valve.

47. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , further comprising a connection indicator operatively connected to the control electronics to provide an indication that the reusable part has been connected to the disposable part.

48. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , wherein the spring is disposed in the disposable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

49. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , wherein the spring is disposed in the reusable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

50. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 40 , wherein the solvent solution has a ratio of water to alcohol of about 40:60 to about 60:40.

51. A two-part bioactive agent delivery system, the system comprising:

a disposable part comprising:

an agent reservoir,

a bolus chamber,

a first piston movably disposed in the agent reservoir, the first piston configured to transfer a bioactive agent from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber,

a transdermal patch in fluid connection with the bolus chamber and configured to transdermally deliver the bioactive agent to a user, and

a second piston movably disposed in the bolus chamber, the second piston configured to transfer bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch;

a reusable part comprising a power source and control electronics, the control electronics configured to deliver bioactive agent from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch;

a first spring extending from the first piston, the first spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the disposable part is connected to the reusable part and the agent reservoir contains the bioactive agent; and

a second spring extending from the second piston, the second spring configured to become at least partially loaded when the bioactive agent is in the bolus chamber.

52. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , further comprising a valve between the agent reservoir and the bolus chamber, the valve configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the agent reservoir to the bolus chamber.

53. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , wherein the valve is further configured to allow the bioactive agent to move from the bolus chamber to the transdermal patch.

54. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , wherein the valve is a rotatable valve having a range of motion between 60° and 90°.

55. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , the second piston configured to move and load the second spring when pressurized the bioactive agent enters the bolus chamber from the agent reservoir through a valve.

56. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , further comprising a connection indicator operatively connected to the control electronics to provide an indication that the reusable part has been connected to the disposable part.

57. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , wherein the first spring is disposed in the disposable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

58. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , wherein the first spring is disposed in the reusable part prior to connecting the disposable part to the reusable part.

59. The two-part bioactive agent delivery system of claim 51 , wherein the solvent solution has a ratio of water to alcohol of about 40:60 to about 60:40.
