Abstract

The specification discloses a portable dialysis machine having a detachable controller unit and base unit. The controller unit includes a door having an interior face, a housing with a panel, where the housing and panel define a recessed region configured to receive the interior face of the door, and a manifold receiver fixedly attached to the panel. The manifold includes diaphragms adapted to minimize the dead space between the dialysis machine pins and improve responsivity. The base unit has a planar surface for receiving a container of fluid, a scale integrated with the planar surface and a heater in thermal communication with the container. Embodiments of the disclosed portable dialysis system have improved structural and functional features, including improved modularity, ease of use, and safety features.

Claims (30)

1. A disposable kit adapted to be installed in a dialysis machine, comprising

a manifold comprising one or more fluid flow paths, one or more ports in fluid communication with the one or more fluid flow paths and at least one diaphragm positioned over at least one of the one or more fluid flow paths, wherein the at least one diaphragm comprises a convex exterior surface protruding outward from the manifold and a periphery surrounding the convex exterior surface, wherein the periphery is fixedly attached to the manifold, and wherein the periphery has a same height as the manifold; and

at least one tube segment fixedly attached to the one or more ports; and

a dialyzer fixedly attached to at least a portion of the at least one tube segment.

2. The disposable kit of claim 1 , wherein a height of the convex exterior surface is between 0.03 and 0.04 inches relative to the manifold.

3. The disposable kit of claim 1 , wherein the convex exterior surface has a thickness that is substantially constant.

4. The disposable kit of claim 3 , wherein the thickness is between 0.03 and 0.04 inches.

5. The disposable kit of claim 1 , wherein a total diameter of the diaphragm is between 0.625 and 0.675 inches.

6. A disposable kit adapted to be installed in a dialysis machine comprising

a manifold comprising one or more fluid flow paths, one or more ports in fluid communication with the one or more fluid flow paths and at least one diaphragm positioned over at least one of the one or more fluid flow paths, wherein the at least one diaphragm comprises:

a planar periphery encircling a first bend wherein the planar periphery is fixedly attached to the manifold and

a convex exterior surface continuing and protruding outward from the first bend;

at least one tube segment fixedly attached to the one or more ports; and

a dialyzer fixedly attached to at least a portion of the at least one tube segment.

7. The disposable kit of claim 6 , wherein a height of the convex exterior surface is between 0.03 and 0.04 inches relative to a surface of the planar periphery.

8. The disposable kit of claim 6 , wherein the convex exterior surface has a thickness that is substantially constant.

9. The disposable kit of claim 8 , wherein the thickness is between 0.03 and 0.04 inches.

10. The disposable kit of claim 6 , wherein a total diameter of the diaphragm is between 0.625 and 0.675 inches.

11. The disposable kit of claim 6 , wherein a length of the convex exterior surface is between 0.125 and 0.15 inches.

12. A disposable kit adapted to be installed in a dialysis machine comprising:

a manifold comprising one or more fluid flow paths, one or more ports in fluid communication with the one or more fluid flow paths and at least one diaphragm positioned over at least one of the one or more fluid flow paths, wherein the at least one diaphragm comprises:

a first sloped surface extending up from a planar surface of the manifold and having a first end and a first bend, wherein the first end is fixedly attached to said manifold, and

a convex exterior surface continuing and protruding outward from the first bend of the first sloped surface;

at least one tube segment fixedly attached to the one or more ports; and

a dialyzer fixedly attached to at least a portion of the at least one tube segment.

13. The disposable kit of claim 12 , wherein a height of the convex exterior surface is between 0.01 and 0.02 inches relative to the first sloped surface.

14. The disposable kit of claim 12 , wherein the convex exterior surface has a thickness that is substantially constant.

15. The disposable kit claim 14 , wherein the thickness of the convex exterior surface is between 0.03 and 0.04 inches.

16. The disposable kit of claim 12 , wherein a total diameter of the diaphragm is between 0.625 and 0.675 inches.

17. The disposable kit of claim 12 , wherein a length of the convex exterior surface is between 0.125 and 0.15 inches and a length of the first sloped surface is between 0.25 and 0.2625 inches.
