Abstract

Method and system for group communication across electronic mail users and feature phone users. A method for receiving electronic mails on a feature phone includes receiving a text message on the feature phone in response to a first electronic mail. The method also includes calling a telephonic number embedded in the text message to listen to an audio clip of the first electronic mail and providing a voice input as a response to the first electronic mail. The system includes a feature phone that receives a plurality of electronic mails. The system also includes one or more electronic devices, and a communication interface in electronic communication with the feature phone and the one or more electronic devices. The system further includes a memory that stores instructions, and a processor responsive to the instructions to receive a text message in response to an electronic mail transmitted by an electronic mail user.

Claims (51)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a computing device, from a first device, an email message comprising first text and audio data, said email message addressed to a second user;

converting, via the computing device, said audio data to second text data;

determining, by the computing device, a sum of the number of characters of said first and second text data, the determination further comprising comparing the determined sum to a predefined number;

generating, via the computing device, a Short Message Service (SMS) message in response to said email message, said SMS message comprising said second text data and a telephonic number for enabling access to said audio data included in said email message;

including, via the computing device, said first text data of said email message in said SMS message when the determined sum of the number of characters of said first and second text data is less than the predefined number;

communicating, via the computing device, said SMS message to said second user;

receiving, via the computing device, an indication of an interaction with the telephonic number within said SMS message; and

providing said audio data to said second user.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

embedding said audio data in said SMS message, wherein said communicated SMS message additionally comprises said audio data.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a phone number of said second user; and

communicating said SMS message to said second user's device using said phone number, said second user's device being a feature phone.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising configuring a second shortcut key corresponding to said SMS message, said second shortcut key associated with said phone number.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said second shortcut key enables said access to said audio data.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said converting is performed by an interactive voice response (IVR) unit.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said audio data is a voice message generated by a first user associated with said first device.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium tangibly encoded with computer-executable instructions, that when executed by a processor associated with a computing device, performs a method comprising:

receiving, at the computing device, from a first device, an email message comprising first text and audio data, said email message addressed to a second user;

converting, via the computing device, said audio data to second text data;

determining, by the computing device, a sum of the number of characters of said first and second text data, the determination further comprising comparing the determined sum to a predefined number;

generating, via the computing device, a Short Message Service (SMS) message in response to said email message, said SMS message comprising said second text data and a telephonic number for enabling access to said audio data included in said email message;

including, via the computing device, said first text data of said email message in said SMS message when the determined sum of the number of characters of said first and second text data is less than the predefined number;

communicating, via the computing device, said SMS message to said second user;

receiving, via the computing device, an indication of an interaction with the telephonic number within said SMS message; and

providing said audio data to said second user.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , further comprising:

embedding said audio data in said SMS message, wherein said communicated SMS message additionally comprises said audio data.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , further comprising:

identifying a phone number of said second user; and

communicating said SMS message to said second user's device using said phone number, said second user's device being a feature phone.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , further comprising configuring a second shortcut key corresponding to said SMS message, said second shortcut key associated with said phone number, wherein said shortcut key enables said access to said audio data.

12. A computing device comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for tangibly storing thereon program logic for execution by the processor, the program logic comprising:

logic executed by the processor for receiving, at the computing device, from a first device, an email first message comprising first text and audio data, said email message addressed to a second user;

logic executed by the processor for converting, via the computing device, said audio data to second text data;

logic executed by the processor for determining, via the computing device, a sum of the number of characters of said first and second text data, the determination further comprising comparing the determined sum to a predefined number;

logic executed by the processor for generating, via the computing device, a Short Message Service (SMS) message in response to said email message, said SMS message comprising said second text data and a telephonic number for enabling access to said audio data included in said email message;

logic executed by the processor for including said first text data of said email message in said SMS message when the determined sum of the number of characters of said first and second text data is less than the predefined number;

logic executed by the processor for communicating, via the computing device, said SMS message to said second user;

logic executed by the processor for receiving, via the computing device, an indication of an interaction with the telephonic number within said SMS message; and

logic executed by the processor for providing said audio data to said second user.

13. The computing device of claim 12 , further comprising:

logic executed by the processor for embedding said audio data in said SMS message, wherein said communicated SMS message additionally comprises said audio data.

14. The computing device of claim 12 , further comprising:

logic executed by the processor for identifying a phone number of said second user; and

logic executed by the processor for communicating said SMS message to said second user's device using said phone number, said second user's device being a feature phone.

15. The computing device of claim 14 , further comprising:

logic executed by the processor for configuring a second shortcut key corresponding to said SMS message, said second shortcut key associated with said phone number, wherein said shortcut key enables said access to said audio data.
