Abstract

An apparatus for fabricating an elastic nonwoven material generally includes a first bonding module, a second bonding module positioned in close proximity to the first bonding module, and a pinching device. The first bonding module and the second bonding module are adapted to bond at least one elastic strand of the elastic nonwoven material. The pinching device is adapted to limit a snap-back potential of the at least one elastic strand if the at least one elastic strand becomes severed during bonding.

Claims (34)

1. An apparatus for fabricating an elastic nonwoven material, the apparatus comprising:

a first bonding module;

a second bonding module positioned in close proximity to the first bonding module, the first bonding module and the second bonding module being adapted to bond at least one elastic strand of the elastic nonwoven material; and

a pinching device adapted to limit a snap-back potential of the at least one elastic strand if the at least one elastic strand becomes severed during bonding.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pinching device comprises a roller that floatingly contacts the second bonding module.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the pinching device comprises a base and a biasing element by which the roller is floatingly mounted to the base.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the pinching device is adjustable in at least two degrees of freedom.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the at least two degrees of freedom include at least one translating degree of freedom and at least one rotating degree of freedom.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first bonding module is mounted on a first bonding module frame, the second bonding module is mounted on a second bonding module frame, and the pinching device comprises a bracket assembly mounted to at least one of the first bonding module frame and the second bonding module frame.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second bonding module is an anvil.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the first bonding module is an ultrasonic horn.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the pinching device comprises a roller that floatingly contacts the anvil.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second bonding module has a face with a width and a circumferential axis, the face having a plurality of ridges each of which defines a plurality of interspaced lands and notches.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the ridges extend obliquely across the circumferential axis.

12. An apparatus for fabricating an elastic nonwoven material, the apparatus comprising:

a first bonding module;

a second bonding module positioned in close proximity to the first bonding module; and

a pinching device positioned in close proximity to the second bonding module, the pinching device comprising a base, a biasing element, and a roller, wherein the biasing element biases the roller into contact with the second bonding module.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the pinching device is adjustable in at least two degrees of freedom.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the second bonding module is an anvil.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the base and the roller are oriented such that the biasing element applies a biasing force substantially perpendicular to a rotation axis of the second bonding module.

16. A system for fabricating an elastic nonwoven material, the system comprising:

a supply station comprising:

a first supply roll configured to supply a first nonwoven fabric;

a second supply roll configured to supply a second nonwoven fabric; and

at least one supply spool configured to supply at least one elastic strand;

a processing station comprising:

a first bonding module;

a second bonding module configured to cooperate with the first bonding module to perform a bonding operation of the elastic strand between the first nonwoven fabric and the second nonwoven fabric, the second bonding module being positioned in close proximity to the first bonding module; and

a pinching device adapted to limit a snap-back potential of the at least one elastic strand if the at least one elastic strand becomes severed during bonding.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the pinching device includes a roller that floatingly contacts the second bonding module.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein an interface is defined between the first and second bonding modules, the roller and the second bonding module configured to automatically feed the at least one severed elastic strand back into the interface.

19. The system of claim 16 , wherein the first bonding module is an ultrasonic horn and the second bonding module is an anvil.

20. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processing station further comprises a collection station comprising a puller roll configured to collect the elastic nonwoven material.
