Abstract

A system for reducing airway obstructions of a patient may include a ventilator, a control unit, a gas delivery circuit with a proximal end in fluid communication with the ventilator and a distal end in fluid communication with a nasal interface, and a nasal interface. The nasal interface may include at least one jet nozzle, and at least one spontaneous respiration sensor in communication with the control unit for detecting a respiration effort pattern and a need for supporting airway patency. The system may be open to ambient. The control unit may determine more than one gas output velocities. The more than one gas output velocities may be synchronized with different parts of a spontaneous breath effort cycle, and a gas output velocity may be determined by a need for supporting airway patency.

Claims (48)

1. A ventilation system comprising:

a nozzle for delivering gas from the ventilator into the inlet of the outer tube, the nozzle disposed outside the inlet of the outer tube such that ambient air may flow into the inlet around a periphery of the nozzle,

wherein the patient ventilation interface comprises a nasal interface and the outer tube is dimensioned to fit at least partially inside a patient's nostril.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein a diameter and position of the nozzle are configured such that a jet profile of the gas delivered by the nozzle reaches a diameter equal to the throat diameter at the jet pump throat.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the diameter and position of the nozzle are configured such that the jet profile of the gas delivered by the nozzle reaches the diameter equal to the throat diameter at an exit of the jet pump throat.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outlet defines an outlet diameter greater than the throat diameter.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the outer tube has a constantly tapering internal diameter from the inlet to the jet pump throat.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein a jet profile defined by the ventilation gas delivered by the nozzle and the outer tube together define an entrainment area having an annular cross-section between the jet profile and the outer tube.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the delivery of the gas by the nozzle creates a positive pressure area between the jet pump throat and the outlet of the outer tube and a negative pressure area in the entrainment area.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the nozzle is concentric to the jet pump throat.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the patient ventilation interface is adapted to connect to the ventilator with tubing having an outer diameter of 3-7 mm.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein an inner diameter of a tip of the nozzle is 0.010 inches to 0.080 inches.

11. A ventilation system comprising:

a ventilator; and

a patient ventilation interface in fluid communication with the ventilator, the patient ventilation interface comprising:

an outer tube having an inlet, an outlet, and a jet pump throat between the inlet and the outlet, the inlet defining an inlet diameter and the jet pump throat defining a throat diameter less than the inlet diameter; and

a nozzle for delivering gas from the ventilator into the inlet of the outer tube, the nozzle disposed outside the inlet of the outer tube such that ambient air may flow into the inlet around a periphery of the nozzle,

wherein the diameter and position of the nozzle are configured such that the jet profile of the gas delivered by the nozzle reaches the diameter equal to the throat diameter at an entrance of the jet pump throat.
