Abstract

A medical device can include a working end comprising a jaw mechanism configured to perform a clamping function and a translating cutting mechanism configured to perform a cutting function in response to translating movement of the translating cutting mechanism. The medical device can further include at least two user-actuated input mechanisms, and a computer processor operably coupled to the working end and to the at least two user-actuated control input mechanisms. In an operational state, the computer processor commands a movement of the translating cutting mechanism through a first range of motion in response to a first command received from actuation of a first of the at least two user-actuated control input mechanisms, and commands a movement of the translating cutting mechanism through a second range of motion in response to at least a second command received from actuation of at least a second of the at least two user-actuated control input mechanisms, the second range of motion being different from the first range of motion.

Claims (44)

1. A medical device comprising:

an instrument comprising a shaft and a working end at a distal end portion of the shaft, the working end comprising:

a jaw mechanism moveable between an open position and a closed position, and

a translating mechanism moveable in a first direction and a second direction relative to the jaw mechanism, the first and second directions being opposite to one another; and

a controller comprising a computer processor, the controller configured to:

in response to a first input, control movement of the translating mechanism from a proximal position to an intermediate position relative to the jaw mechanism,

in response to a second input, control movement of the translating mechanism from the intermediate position to a distal position relative to the jaw mechanism,

control movement of the translating mechanism from the distal position back to the proximal position, and

monitor a position of the translating mechanism to determine whether or not the translating mechanism has moved from the distal position back to the proximal position after a predetermined time period.

2. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the jaw mechanism is configured to move from the open position to the closed position in response to movement of the translating mechanism from the proximal position to the intermediate position.

3. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the translating mechanism comprises a cutting blade.

4. The medical device of claim 3 , wherein the cutting blade is disposed along a length of the jaw mechanism when the cutting blade is in a position from the intermediate position to the distal position.

5. The medical device of claim 1 , further comprising a gripping mechanism or a trigger mechanism, wherein actuation of the gripping mechanism or the trigger mechanism causes the first input.

6. The medical device of claim 5 , further comprising a button or a foot pedal, wherein actuation of the button or the foot pedal causes the second input.

7. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to provide tactile feedback to a user in response to the translating mechanism moving from the intermediate position to the distal position.

8. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to output feedback if the translating mechanism is not in the proximal position after the predetermined time period.

9. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to control movement of the translating mechanism to cause the translating mechanism to move reciprocally in the first and second directions if the translating mechanism is not in the proximal position after the predetermined time period.

10. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to control movement of the translating mechanism to cause the translating mechanism to dither if the translating mechanism is not in the proximal position after the predetermined time period.

11. The medical device of claim 1 , wherein the working end comprises a stapling mechanism.

12. A method of controlling a medical instrument, the method comprising:

in response to a first input, causing movement of a translating mechanism from a proximal position to an intermediate position along a jaw mechanism of the medical instrument, wherein the movement of the translating mechanism from the proximal position to the intermediate position moves the jaw mechanism from an open position to a closed position, wherein a proximal portion of the jaw mechanism is coupled to a shaft of the medical instrument;

in response to a second input, causing movement of the translating mechanism from the intermediate position to a distal position along the jaw mechanism;

causing movement of the translating mechanism from the distal position back to the proximal position; and

monitoring whether or not the translating mechanism has moved from the distal position back to the proximal position after a predetermined time period.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising performing a cutting function with the translating mechanism when the translating mechanism moves from the intermediate position to the distal position.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving the first input in response to actuation of a gripping mechanism or a trigger mechanism.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising receiving the second input from actuation of a button or a foot pedal.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising providing tactile feedback to a user in response to the movement of the translating mechanism from the intermediate position to the distal position.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising outputting feedback in response to determining, from the monitoring, that the translating mechanism has not moved back to the proximal position after the predetermined time period.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising moving the translating mechanism reciprocally in response to determining, from the monitoring, that the translating mechanism has not moved back to the proximal position after the predetermined time period.

19. The method of claim 12 , further comprising dithering the translating mechanism in response to determining, from the monitoring, that the translating mechanism has not moved back to the proximal position after the predetermined time period.

20. The method of claim 12 , further comprising performing a stapling function using the jaw mechanism.

21. The method of claim 12 , further comprising performing a fusing function using the jaw mechanism.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the jaw mechanism performs the fusing function in response to a third input,

the first input being received in response to actuation of a first input device,

the second input and the third input being received in response to actuation of a second input device, and

the first input device is different from the second input device.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the jaw mechanism performs the fusing function in response to a third input,

the first input is received in response to actuation of a first input device,

the second input is received in response to actuation of a second input device,

the third input is received in response to actuation of a third input device, and

the first input device, the second input device, and the third input device being different devices.
