Abstract

A system and method are provided for routing content requests. On a given server network, content requests comprising a character string may be routed up a hierarchical network topology until a linear chain, corresponding to the character string, is identified. Thus, the content request is forwarded up the hierarchy until an intersecting server network is reached. Then the content request is forwarded down the hierarchy until, along a published linear chain corresponding to the character string, until a content source is reached. Content is provided to the requestor along a reverse path of the content request.

Claims (44)

1. A regional server for routing content requests, the regional server included in a present server network of a plurality of server networks of a present hierarchical level, the present hierarchical level being one of a plurality of hierarchical levels of a region-based hierarchical network, the regional server comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memory resources storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the regional server to:

receive a plurality of content requests for a target content from a plurality of end users;

determine whether a linear chain corresponding to the target content intersects with the present server network, the present server network representing a specified geographic region;

based on determining that the linear chain corresponding to the target content does not intersect with the present server network, pool the plurality of content requests into a single content request for the target content; and

forward the single content request to a next hierarchical level of the region-based hierarchical network, the next hierarchical level comprising a number of higher-tiered servers and representing a larger geographic region encompassing the specified geographic region.

2. The regional server of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of content requests include a character string identifying the target content and the character string is published in the linear chain through the plurality of hierarchical levels of the region-based hierarchical network.

3. The regional server of claim 1 , wherein the executed instructions further cause the regional server to:

based on forwarding the single content request to the next hierarchical level, receive the target content from one of the higher-tiered servers of the next hierarchical level; and

forward the target content to at least one of the plurality of end users.

4. The regional server of claim 3 , wherein the executed instructions further cause the regional server to:

log an entry, corresponding to the single content request in a pending interest table of the regional server; and

based on forwarding the target content to the at least one of the plurality of end users, amend or delete the entry in the pending interest table.

5. The regional server of claim 3 , wherein the executed instructions further cause the regional server to:

in response to receiving the target content from the one of the higher-tiered servers, cache the target content temporarily in a content cache of the regional server.

6. The regional server of claim 1 , wherein the executed instructions further cause the regional server to:

in response to determining that the linear chain corresponding to the target content intersects with the present server network, forward the single content request to a respective server of the present server network.

7. The regional server of claim 6 , wherein the present hierarchical level is a lowest hierarchical level of the region-based hierarchical network, and wherein the executed instructions further cause the regional server to:

based on forwarding the single content request to the respective server of the present server network, receive the target content from the respective server; and

forward the target content directly to at least one of the plurality of the end users based on the present hierarchical level being the lowest hierarchical level of the region-based hierarchical network.

8. The regional server of claim 2 , wherein the executed instructions further cause the regional server to:

based on the character string, identify that the single content request includes update commands to update a database; and forward the single content request based on the character string to cause the database to be updated.

9. A method for routing content requests by a regional server included in a present server network of a plurality of server networks of a present hierarchical level, the present hierarchical level being one of a plurality of hierarchical levels of a region-based hierarchical network, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of content requests for a target content from a plurality of end users;

determining whether a linear chain corresponding to the target content intersects with the present server network, the present server network representing a specified geographic region;

based on determining that the linear chain corresponding to the target content does not intersect with the present server network, pooling the plurality of content requests into a single content request for the target content; and

forwarding the single content request to a next hierarchical level of the region-based hierarchical network, the next hierarchical level comprising a number of higher-tiered servers and representing a larger geographic region encompassing the specified geographic region.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of content requests include a character string identifying the target content and the character string is published in the linear chain through the plurality of hierarchical levels of the region-based hierarchical network.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

based on forwarding the single content request to the next hierarchical level, receiving the target content from one of the higher-tiered servers of the next hierarchical level; and

forwarding the target content to at least one of the plurality of end users.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

logging an entry, corresponding to the single content request in a pending interest table of the regional server; and

based on forwarding the target content to the at least one of the plurality of end users, amending or deleting the entry in the pending interest table.

13. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

in response to receiving the target content from the one of the higher-tiered servers, caching the target content temporarily in a content cache of the regional server.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the linear chain corresponding to the target content intersects with the present server network, forwarding the single content request to a respective server of the present server network.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the present hierarchical level is a lowest hierarchical level of the region-based hierarchical network, the method further comprising:

based on forwarding the single content request to the respective server of the present server network, receiving the target content from the respective server; and

forwarding the target content directly to at least one of the plurality of the end users based on the present hierarchical level being the lowest hierarchical level of the region-based hierarchical network.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

based on the character string, identifying that the single content request includes update commands to update a database; and forwarding the single content request based on the character string to cause the database to be updated.
