Abstract

An orthodontic appliance may include an archwire and multiple orthodontic brackets. The archwire may fit within a human mouth and contain multiple male connectors. Each orthodontic bracket may have a configuration that facilitates attaching the orthodontic bracket to a single tooth. Each orthodontic bracket may allow one of the male connectors to be locked into the orthodontic bracket with a snapping action. The male connector may be unable to slide with respect to the orthodontic bracket after being locked in the orthodontic bracket. A manual unlocking action may allow the male connector to disengage from the orthodontic bracket.

Claims (37)

1. A method of moving teeth, comprising:

providing a pre-customized continuous shape memory archform set to a memorized original configuration, the archform comprising a shape configured to follow a dental arch segment,

wherein the archform set to the memorized original configuration is pre-customized based on an expected position of the teeth,

wherein the archform comprises a plurality of bracket connectors disposed on the dental arch segment, each bracket connector of the plurality of bracket connectors corresponding to an individual tooth of the dental arch segment such that the plurality of bracket connectors correspond to each and every tooth of the dental arch segment,

wherein the archform comprises a plurality of interproximal segments, each interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments corresponding to an interdental space between adjacent teeth of the dental arch segment,

wherein each interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments is interspersed between a pair of bracket connectors,

wherein the archform defines a longitudinal axis and wherein each interproximal segment comprises a first point on the longitudinal axis, a second point on the longitudinal axis, and an interproximal loop between the first point and the second point, the interproximal loop comprising a first portion configured to extend in a gingival direction away from the first point and a second portion configured to extend in an occlusal direction to the second point, without extending on an occlusal side of the longitudinal axis, thereby defining a gap along the longitudinal axis between the first and second points that provides an unobstructed opening configured to face in the occlusal direction, the unobstructed opening proving access into the interproximal loop, and wherein each interproximal segment corresponds to each and every interdental space of the dental arch segment; and

locking each bracket connector in a respective orthodontic bracket, wherein the archform moves the teeth from an initial configuration to the final alignment by forces imparted by deflection of the archform such that the archform moves back toward the memorized original configuration.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archform moves at least one tooth in a mesio-distal direction.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archform moves at least one tooth in an occlusal-gingival direction.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archform moves at least one tooth in a facio-lingual direction.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments deflects to open the interproximal loop such that adjacent teeth move away from each other and toward the final alignment.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments deflects to close the interproximal loop such that adjacent teeth move towards each other and the final alignment.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archform comprises a round cross-section.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archform comprises a rectangular cross-section.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing an indirect bonding tray comprising the orthodontic brackets.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the archform does not slide with respect to each orthodontic bracket when each bracket connector is locked in the respective orthodontic bracket.

11. A method of moving teeth, comprising:

coupling to the teeth of a patient, a custom shape memory archform configured to follow a dental arch segment,

wherein the archform comprises a plurality of bracket connectors, each bracket connector of the plurality of bracket connectors corresponding to an individual tooth of the dental arch such that the plurality of bracket connectors correspond to each and every tooth of the dental arch segment included in an orthodontic treatment plan,

wherein the archform comprises a plurality of interproximal segments, each interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments corresponding to an interdental space between teeth of the dental arch segment such that the plurality of interproximal segments correspond to each and every interdental space among teeth included in an orthodontic treatment plan,

wherein an interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments is interspersed between directly adjacent bracket connectors,

wherein the archform defines a longitudinal axis and wherein each interproximal segment comprises a first point on the longitudinal axis, a second point on the longitudinal axis, and an interproximal loop extending away from the longitudinal axis in a gingival direction between the first point and the second point, without extending on an occlusal side of the longitudinal axis, to define a gap along the longitudinal axis that is open in an occlusal direction to facilitate flossing; and

locking the plurality of bracket connectors in respective orthodontic brackets positioned on teeth, wherein following locking the plurality of bracket connectors in respective orthodontic brackets, the archform moves the teeth from an initial configuration to a final alignment by forces imparted by deflection of the archform, wherein the archform is designed based on the expected position of the teeth when the teeth are in the final alignment.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the archform moves at least one tooth in a mesio-distal direction.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the archform moves at least one tooth in an occlusal-gingival direction.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the archform moves at least one tooth in a facio-lingual direction.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one interproximal segment of the plurality of interproximal segments exerts a reaction force.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one bracket connector of the plurality of bracket connectors exerts a reaction force.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising providing an indirect bonding tray comprising the orthodontic brackets.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the archform does not slide with respect to each of the orthodontic brackets when the plurality of bracket connectors are locked in respective orthodontic brackets.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the archform comprises a round cross-section.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the archform comprises a rectangular cross-section.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interproximal loop comprises two substantially parallel side bars and an arc portion.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interproximal loop comprises a U-shape, T-shape, tear-drop shape, triangle shape, or rectangular shape.

23. The method of claim 11 , wherein the interproximal loop comprises two substantially parallel side bars and an arc portion.

24. The method of claim 11 , wherein the interproximal loop comprises a U-shape, T-shape, tear-drop shape, triangle shape, or rectangular shape.
