Abstract

Footwear systems include an article of footwear and a data transmission system engaged with the article of footwear. The transmission system transmits data to a remote system, such as a display system, another data transmission system, a processing system, etc. Such footwear systems further may include activation systems for activating the transmission and/or display systems. The transmitted data may be used for various purposes, such as: (a) identifying a user of the article of footwear; (b) activating targeted advertising or product information; (c) confirming the user's presence at a specific location and/or at a specific time; (d) determining start, finish, and/or intermediate split times for specific user; (e) confirming athletic equipment usage; (f) providing data for a game or reward program; (g) registering the user for an event or competition; or the like.

Claims (30)

1. A data transfer method, comprising:

activating, by an activation system of an article of footwear, a data transmission system of the article of footwear;

in response to the activating, transmitting a first set of data to a remote computer system, wherein the first set of data comprises usage data associated with the article of footwear, and

in response to the transmitting the first set of data, displaying, via a display service and based on the first set of data, product information comprising one or more product recommendations.

2. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of data further comprises identification data for the article of footwear.

3. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the first set of data further comprises a purchase date associated with the article of footwear.

4. The data transfer method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying, via the display device, a location of the recommended product.

5. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the activating the data transmission system further comprises:

receiving, from an accelerometer associated with the article of footwear, output data.

6. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the activating the data transmission system further comprises:

determining that a first user is within a threshold distance to the remote computer system.

7. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the activating the data transmission system further comprises:

exposing the article of footwear to at least one of wireless signal or a magnetic field.

8. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the activating the data transmission system further comprises:

detecting contact of an input device operatively connected to the data transmission system.

9. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the product information comprises product information for at least one of an article of clothing or a piece of athletic equipment.

10. The data transfer method of claim 1 , wherein the product information comprises a reward associated with one or more products.

11. The data transfer method of claim 10 , wherein the reward comprises at least one of a coupon or a discount offer.

12. A data transfer system, comprising:

an article of footwear;

a data transmission system releasably engaged with the article of footwear, wherein the data transmission system transmits a first set of data for receipt by a plurality of remote computer systems; and

at least a first remote computer system, of the plurality of remote computer systems, in communication with the data transmission system, wherein the first remote computer system receives the first set of data from the data transmission system, wherein the first set of data comprises athletic performance data associated with the article of footwear.

13. The data transfer system of claim 12 , further comprising an activation system, wherein the activation system activates the data transmission system to send the first set of data to the first remote computer system.

14. The data transfer system of claim 13 , wherein the activation system activates the data transmission system in response to selection of an input device operatively connected to the data transmission system.

15. The data transfer system of claim 13 , wherein the activation system activates the data transmission system based on detecting a wireless signal.

16. The data transfer system of claim 13 , wherein the activation system activates the data transmission system based on detecting input from a magnetic sensor system.

17. The data transfer system of claim 12 , further comprising a display device, wherein the data transmission system activates the display device to present the first set of data.

18. The data transfer system of claim 12 , further comprising a display device, wherein the data transmission system activates the display device to present, based on identification data for the article of footwear, advertising information for one or more products.

19. The data transfer system of claim 18 , wherein the one or more products comprise at least one of an article of clothing or a piece of athletic equipment.
