Composition including silane-grafted polyolefin
A silane-grafted polyolefin composition is disclosed and includes a desired reduced specific weight material. The composition finds application in a wide array of uses, and in particular automotive and uses such as windshield wipers, where this composition is used in place of conventional materials such as TPV and EPDM rubber formulations.
1. A windshield wiper comprising a windshield wiper composition, the windshield wiper composition consisting of:
a silane-grafted polyolefin having a density of from about 0.84 g/cm 3 to about 0.96 g/cm 3 ; and
one or more additives selected from the group consisting of polypropylenes, thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV), olefinic block copolymers, ethylene propylene diene terpolymers (EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, ethylene n-butyl acrylate copolymers, and ethylene methacrylate copolymers;
wherein the polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of a blend of propylene/α-olefin copolymer with an ethylene/α-olefin copolymer, and a propylene/α-olefin copolymer.
2. A method for manufacturing a windshield wiper, comprising:
grafting silanes to a polyolefin to form a silane-grafted polyolefin;
extruding a composition comprising the silane-grafted polyolefin having a density of from about 0.84 g/cm 3 to about 0.96 g/cm 3 , a condensation catalyst, and optionally one or more fillers selected from the group consisting of polypropylenes, thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPV), ethylene propylene diene terpolymers (EPDM), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, ethylene n-butyl acrylate copolymers, and ethylene methacrylate copolymers; and
molding the extruded composition into the windshield wiper;
wherein the polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of a blend of propylene/α-olefin copolymer with an ethylene/α-olefin copolymer, and a propylene/α-olefin copolymer.
