Abstract

A process for the production of acetic acid which process comprises the steps of. (a) introducing methanol and/or a reactive derivative thereof and carbon monoxide into a first reaction zone containing a liquid reaction composition comprising a carbonylation catalyst, optionally a carbonylation catalyst promoter, methyl iodide, methyl acetate, acetic acid and water, (b) withdrawing at least a portion of the liquid reaction composition from the first reaction zone; (c) passing at least a portion of the withdrawn liquid reaction composition to a second reaction zone, wherein a gas feed comprising carbon monoxide is added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone at one or more points upstream of the second reaction zone, one or more points within the second reaction zone, or a combination of one or more points upstream of the second reaction zone and one or more points within the second reaction zone; and (d) passing at least a portion of the liquid reaction composition from the second reaction zone into a flash separation zone to form: a vapour fraction, which comprises acetic acid, methyl iodide, methyl acetate and low pressure off-gas; and, a liquid fraction, which comprises carbonylation catalyst and optional carbonylation catalyst promoter; wherein the flow rate in kg of gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone per tonne of liquid reaction composition being passed to the flash separation zone (kg/te), is in the range of from 0.5F G to 1.2F G , wherein F G is defined according to equation 1: (1) F G =(0.296086962×t r )+(0.369636×R R )+(0.295878701×G P 0.8134 )−23.3448 wherein, t r is the residence time (seconds) of the liquid reaction composition within the second reaction zone which is calculated using equation 2: (2) t r =V 2 /F f wherein, V 2 is the volume of the second reaction zone (m 3 ) and F f is the volumetric flow rate of liquid reaction composition to the flash separation zone (m 3 /s), R R is the reaction rate of the liquid reaction composition passed to the second reaction zone at the temperature at which it is withdrawn from the first reaction zone (mol/litre/hour), and G p is the purity of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone expressed as the mass fraction of carbon monoxide in the gas feed.

Claims (33)

1. A process for the production of acetic acid which process comprises the steps of:

(a) introducing methanol and/or a reactive derivative thereof and carbon monoxide into a first reaction zone containing a liquid reaction composition comprising a carbonylation catalyst, optionally a carbonylation catalyst promoter, methyl iodide, methyl acetate, acetic acid and water;

(b) withdrawing at least a portion of the liquid reaction composition from the first reaction zone;

(c) passing at least a portion of the withdrawn liquid reaction composition to a second reaction zone, wherein a gas feed comprising carbon monoxide is added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone at one or more points upstream of the second reaction zone, one or more points within the second reaction zone, or a combination of one or more points upstream of the second reaction zone and one or more points within the second reaction zone; and

(d) passing at least a portion of the liquid reaction composition from the second reaction zone into a flash separation zone to form a vapour fraction, which comprises acetic acid, methyl iodide, methyl acetate, and a liquid fraction, which comprises carbonylation catalyst and optional carbonylation catalyst promoter;

wherein the flow rate in kg of gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone per tonne of liquid reaction composition being passed to the flash separation zone (kg/te), is in the range of from 0.5F G to 1.2F G , wherein F G is defined according to equation 1:

wherein, t r is the residence time (seconds) of the liquid reaction composition within the second reaction zone which is calculated using equation 2:

wherein, V 2 is the volume of the second reaction zone (m 3 ) and F f is the volumetric flow rate of liquid reaction composition to the flash separation zone (m 3 /s), R R is the reaction rate of the liquid reaction composition passed to the second reaction zone at the temperature at which it is withdrawn from the first reaction zone (mol/litre/hour), and G P is the purity of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone expressed as the mass fraction of carbon monoxide in the gas feed.

2. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the flow rate of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone is in the range of from 0.7F G to 1.1F G .

3. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone is of the same composition as the carbon monoxide that is introduced into the first reaction zone.

4. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone is pure carbon monoxide.

5. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone comprises impurities.

6. A process according to claim 5 , wherein the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone comprises high pressure off-gas from the first reaction zone.

7. A process according to claim 5 , wherein the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone consists of high pressure off-gas from the first reaction zone.

8. A process according to claim 5 , wherein G P is at least 0.5 and is less than 1.

9. A process according to claim 1 , wherein t r is in the range of from 10 seconds to 5 minutes.

10. A process according to claim 1 , wherein substantially all of the liquid withdrawn from the first reaction zone is passed to the second reaction zone.

11. A process according to claim 1 , wherein all of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide is added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone upstream of the second reaction zone.

12. A process according to claim 1 , wherein all of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide is added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone at one or more points within the second reaction zone.

13. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the first and the second reaction zones are maintained in separate reaction vessels.

14. A process according to claim 1 , wherein the second reaction zone comprises a section of pipe between the first reaction zone and the flash separation zone.

15. A method for improving a process for the production of acetic acid which process comprising the steps of:

(a) introducing methanol and/or a reactive derivative thereof and carbon monoxide into a first reaction zone containing a liquid reaction composition comprising a carbonylation catalyst, optionally a carbonylation catalyst promoter, methyl iodide, methyl acetate, acetic acid and water;

(b) withdrawing at least a portion of the liquid reaction composition from the first reaction zone;

(c) passing at least a portion of the withdrawn liquid reaction composition to a second reaction zone, wherein a gas feed comprising carbon monoxide is added to the liquid reaction composition withdrawn from the first reaction zone at one or more points upstream of the second reaction zone, one or more points within the second reaction zone, or a combination of one or more points upstream of the second reaction zone and one or more points within the second reaction zone; and

(d) passing at least a portion of the liquid reaction composition from the second reaction zone into a flash separation zone to form: a vapour fraction, which comprises acetic acid, methyl iodide, methyl acetate and low pressure off-gas; and, a liquid fraction, which comprises carbonylation catalyst and optional carbonylation catalyst promoter;

wherein a flow rate in kg of gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone per tonne of liquid reaction composition being passed to the flash separation zone (kg/te), F G , is calculated according to equation 1:

wherein, t r is the residence time (seconds) of the liquid reaction composition within the second reaction zone which is calculated using equation 2:

wherein, V 2 is the volume of the second reaction zone (m 3 ) and F f is the volumetric flow rate of liquid reaction composition to the flash separation zone (m 3 /s), R R is the reaction rate of the liquid reaction composition passed to the second reaction zone at the temperature at which it is withdrawn from the first reaction zone (mol/litre/hour), and G P is the purity of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone expressed as the mass fraction of carbon monoxide in the gas feed; and the flow rate of the gas feed comprising carbon monoxide which is added to the second reaction zone is adjusted to be in the range of from 0.5F G to 1.2F G .
