Abstract

An aqueous synthetic acid composition is disclosed for use in oil industry activities, the composition comprising: lysine and hydrogen chloride in a molar ratio ranging from 1:3 to 1:12.5, preferably from more than 1:5 to 1:8.5. The composition can also further comprise a metal iodide or iodate an alcohol or derivative thereof. The composition demonstrates advantageous properties over known synthetic acids at temperatures above 90° C. The composition is useful in various oil and gas industry operations. Preferred embodiments of the composition provide substantial advantages in matrix acidizing by increasing the effectiveness of wormholing as compared to conventional mineral acids such as HCl.

Claims (29)

1. A method of suspending solubilized calcium carbonate at a high spent pH ranging from 4 to 6, during a matrix acidizing treatment of a hydrocarbon-containing dolomite formation, said method comprising:

providing a composition comprising a HCl and lysine mixture and water; wherein a molar ratio between the HCl and the lysine ranges from 4.5:1 to 8.5:1, and said composition has an initial pH of less than 1;

injecting said composition downhole into said dolomite formation at a pressure below a fracking pressure of the dolomite formation;

allowing a sufficient period of time for the composition to contact said formation to create wormholes in said formation;

dissolving and solubilizing the calcium carbonate in the dolomite formation and maintaining the calcium carbonate in suspension to prevent it from re-precipitating by exposure to said composition; and

wherein said suspended, dissolved and solubilized calcium carbonate has a spent pH of 4-6.

2. A method of suspending solubilized calcium carbonate, during a matrix acidizing treatment of a hydrocarbon-containing chalk formation, said method comprising:

providing a composition comprising a HCl and lysine mixture and water; wherein a molar ratio between the HCl and the lysine ranges from 4.5:1 to 8.5:1, and said composition has an initial pH of less than 1;

injecting said composition downhole into said formation at a desired injection rate and at a pressure below a fracking pressure of the formation;

allowing a sufficient period of time for the composition to contact said formation to become a spent acid composition and to create wormholes in said formation by dissolving calcium carbonate in said hydrocarbon-containing formation;

wherein during said period of time, calcium carbonate dissolved from the formation is solubilized, is maintained in suspension, is maintained in exposure to send spent acid composition, and prevented from re-precipitating by exposure to said spent acid composition; and

wherein a pH of the spent acid composition ranges between 4 and 6.

3. A method of suspending solubilized calcium carbonate, during a matrix acidizing treatment of a hydrocarbon-containing limestone formation, said method comprising:

providing a composition comprising a HCl and lysine mixture and water; wherein the molar ratio between the HCl and the lysine ranges from 4.5:1 to 8.5:1, and said composition has an initial pH of less than 1;

injecting said composition downhole into said formation at a desired injection rate and at a pressure below the fracking pressure of the formation;

allowing a sufficient period of time for the composition to contact said formation to become a spent acid composition and to subsequently create wormholes in said formation by dissolving calcium carbonate in said hydrocarbon-containing formation;

wherein during said period of time, calcium carbonate dissolved from the formation is solubilized, is maintained in suspension by maintaining it exposed to said spent acid composition, and prevented from re-precipitating by exposure to said spent acid composition; and

wherein a pH of the spent acid composition ranges between 4 and 6.

4. A method of creating wormholes in a hydrocarbon-containing formation, said method comprising:

providing a composition comprising a HCl and lysine mixture and water; wherein a molar ratio between the HCl and the lysine ranges from 4.5:1 and 8.5:1, and said composition has an initial pH of less than 1;

injecting said composition downhole at a desired injection rate into said hydrocarbon-containing formation at a pressure below a fracking pressure of the hydrocarbon-containing formation;

allowing a sufficient period of time for the composition to contact said hydrocarbon-containing formation to become a spent acid composition and to subsequently create wormholes in said hydrocarbon-containing formation by dissolving calcium carbonate in said hydrocarbon-containing formation;

maintaining the dissolved calcium carbonate in suspension by maintaining it exposed to said spent acid composition; and

wherein a pH of the spent acid composition ranges between 4 and 6.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein a desired injection rate is determined by:

testing said composition at selected injection rates into a core sample of said formation;

collecting a pore volume to breakthrough data obtained from said testing;

plotting a graph of the pore volume to breakthrough data against the selected injection rates; and

determining an optimal injection rate as a lowest point on the plot.
