Abstract

Disclosed are various approaches for using drag-and-drop to open local files remotely. In one approach, a client device renders a user interface including a first indicium corresponding to a local file of the client device and a second indicium corresponding to a remotely executed application. A drag-and-drop action of the first indicium relative to the second indicium is detected. Responsive to the drag-and-drop action, the remotely executed application opens a copy of the local file.

Claims (38)

1. A system for opening a local file remotely, comprising:

a client device comprising a processor and a memory; and

machine readable instructions stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause the client device to at least:

render a user interface including a first indicium corresponding to the local file of the client device and a window for a remote workspace that includes a second indicium corresponding to a first remote desktop environment and a third indicum corresponding to a second remote desktop environment;

detect a drag-and-drop action of the first indicium into a blank region of the window;

responsive to the drag-and-drop action, update the user interface to list applications that are within or independent of the first and second remote desktop environments, wherein an order of the applications in the list is based on a recency of use in opening the local file or a file of a same type as the local file;

receive a user selection of a particular application from the list;

responsive to the user selection, automatically transfer a copy of the local file from the client device to a remote data store accessible to the particular application;

cause the particular application to open a copy of the local file responsive to the transfer of the copy of the local file to the remote data store;

determine that the copy of the local file has been modified by the particular application; and

automatically transfer the copy of the local file back to the client device, wherein the modified copy of the local file is deleted from the remote data store responsive to closing of the particular application.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the machine readable instructions when executed by the processor cause the at least one computing device to at least, further responsive to the user selection, open a session to communicate with the particular application, wherein during the session, data encoding a graphical user interface of the particular application is sent to the client device over a network, and input data relative to the graphical user interface is sent by the client device to the particular application over the network.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first indicium and the second indicium are graphical icons.

4. A method for opening a local file remotely, comprising:

rendering a user interface including a first indicium corresponding to the local file of a client device and a window for a remote workspace that includes a second indicium corresponding to a first remote desktop environment and a third indicum corresponding to a second remote desktop environment;

detecting a drag-and-drop action of the first indicium into a blank region of the window;

responsive to the drag-and-drop action, updating the user interface to list applications that are within or independent of the first and second remote desktop environments to open the local file, wherein an order of the applications in the list of is based on a recency of use in opening the local file or a file of a same type as the local file;

receiving a user selection of a particular application from the list; and

causing the particular application to open a copy of the local file responsive to the user selection.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first indicium and the second indicium are graphical icons.

6. The method of claim 4 , responsive to the user selection, automatically transferring the copy of the local file from the client device to a remote data store accessible to the particular application.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

determining that the copy of the local file has been modified; and

automatically transferring the copy of the local file back to the client device, wherein the modified copy of the local file is deleted from the remote data store.

8. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising machine readable instructions that, when executed by a processor of a client device, cause the client device to at least:

render a user interface including a first indicium corresponding to a local file of the client device and a window for a remote workspace that includes a second indicium corresponding to a first remote desktop environment and a third indicum corresponding to a second remote desktop environment;

detect a drag-and-drop action of the first indicium into a blank region of the window;

responsive to the drag-and-drop action, update the user interface to list applications that are within or independent of the first and second remote desktop environments wherein an order of the applications in the list is based on a recency of use in opening the local file or a file of a same type as the local file;

receive a user selection of a particular application from the list;

responsive to the user selection, automatically transfer a copy of the local file from the client device to a remote data store accessible to the particular application;

cause the particular application to open a copy of the local file responsive to the transfer of the copy of the local file to the remote data store;

determine that the copy of the local file has been modified by the particular application; and

automatically transfer the copy of the local file back to the client device, wherein the modified copy of the local file is deleted from the remote data store responsive to closing of the particular application.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , further comprising machine readable instructions that further cause the client device to at least, further responsive to the user selection, open a session to communicate with the particular application, wherein during the session, data encoding a graphical user interface of the application is sent to the client device over a network, and input data relative to the graphical user interface is sent by the client device to the application over the network.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the indicium is a graphical icon.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein a selection of the second indicum opens a session with an instance of the first remote desktop environment and a selection of the third indicum opens a session with an instance of the second remote desktop environment.

12. The method of claim 4 , wherein a selection of the second indicum opens a session with an instance of the first remote desktop environment and a selection of the third indicum opens a session with an instance of the second remote desktop environment.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 8 , wherein a selection of the second indicum opens a session with an instance of the first remote desktop environment and a selection of the third indicum opens a session with an instance of the second remote desktop environment.
