Abstract

A method, computer program product, user equipment (UE) and packet data network gateway (P-GW) are provided for activating “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options (PCO). The UE sends a first indication to a first network node as part of the PCO. The first indication includes a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated. The first network node may be a P-GW. If the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, the UE receives downlink data from the first network node. If the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, the UE either receives no downlink data from the first network node or receives an error message from the first network node.

Claims (44)

1. A method in a user equipment (UE) to activate “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options, the method comprising:

sending a first indication to a first network node as part of the protocol configuration options, the first indication including a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated, the first indication further comprising a list of Provisioned Services for “Data Off”, a user identity and location information for the user identity, wherein the list of Provisioned Services is based on the location information for the user identity; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, receiving downlink data from the first network node; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, either receiving no downlink data from the first network node or receiving an error message from the first network node.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE comprises a mobile equipment.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the UE further comprises a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC).

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first network node is a Packet Data Network Gateway (P-GW).

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving downlink data from the first network node comprises receiving downlink data for the user identity.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE has not yet attached to a cellular network, the first indication is an Attach Request.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE is currently attached to a cellular network, the first indication is a Request Bearer Resource Modification message.

8. A user equipment (UE) for activating “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options, the UE comprising:

a communication interface and processor that:

send a first indication to a first network node as part of the protocol configuration options, the first indication including a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated, the first indication further comprising a list of Provisioned Services for “Data Off”, a user identity and location information for the user identity, wherein the list of Provisioned Services is based on the location information for the user identity; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, receiving downlink data from the first network node; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, either receiving no downlink data from the first network node or receiving an error message from the first network node.

9. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the UE is a mobile equipment.

10. The UE of claim 9 , wherein the UE further comprises a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC).

11. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the first network node is a Packet Data Network Gateway (P-GW).

12. The UE of claim 8 , wherein receiving downlink data from the first network node comprises receiving downlink data for the user identity.

13. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the UE has not yet attached to a cellular network, the first indication is an Attach Request.

14. The UE of claim 8 , wherein the UE is currently attached to a cellular network, the first indication is a Request Bearer Resource Modification message.

15. A computer program product for activating “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options, the computer program product comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium readable by a processing circuit and storing instructions for execution by the processing circuit for:

sending a first indication from a user equipment (UE) to a first network node as part of the protocol configuration options, the first indication including a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated, the first indication further comprising a list of Provisioned Services for “Data Off”, a user identity and location information for the user identity, wherein the list of Provisioned Services is based on the location information for the user identity; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, receiving downlink data from the first network node; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, either receiving no downlink data from the first network node or receiving an error message from the first network node.

16. A method in packet data network gateway (P-GW) to activate “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options, the method comprising:

receiving a first indication from a user equipment (UE) as part of the protocol configuration options, the first indication including a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated, the first indication further comprising a list of Provisioned Services for “Data Off”, a user identity and location information for the user identity, wherein the list of Provisioned Services is based on the location information for the user identity; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, sending downlink data to the UE; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, either sending no downlink data to the UE or sending an error message to the UE.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein sending downlink data from the first network node comprises receiving downlink data for the user identity.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the UE has not yet attached to a cellular network, the first indication is an Attach Request.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the UE is currently attached to a cellular network, the first indication is a Request Bearer Resource Modification message.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first indication is received from the UE via a mobile mobility management entity (MME) through a serving gateway (S-GW).

21. A packet data network gateway (P-GW) for activating “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options, the P-GW comprising:

a communication interface and processor that:

send a first indication to a first network node as part of the protocol configuration options, the first indication including a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated, the first indication further comprising a list of Provisioned Services for “Data Off”, a user identity and location information for the user identity, wherein the list of Provisioned Services is based on the location information for the user identity; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, receiving downlink data from the first network node; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, either receiving no downlink data from the first network node or receiving an error message from the first network node.

22. A computer program product for activating “Data Off” services using protocol configuration options, the computer program product comprising:

a non-transitory storage medium readable by a processing circuit and storing instructions for execution by the processing circuit for:

receiving, at a packet data network gateway (P-GW), a first indication from a user equipment (UE) as part of the protocol configuration options, the first indication including a Data Off indication indicating whether a “Data Off” service is activated, the first indication further comprising a list of Provisioned Services for “Data Off”, a user identity and location information for the user identity, wherein the list of Provisioned Services is based on the location information for the user identity; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is deactivated, sending downlink data to the UE; and

if the Data Off indication indicates that the “Data Off” service is activated, either sending no downlink data to the UE or sending an error message to the UE.
