Abstract

An electrochemical sensor is provided which may be formed using micromachining techniques commonly used in the manufacture of integrated circuits. This is achieved by forming microcapillaries in a silicon substrate and forming an opening in an insulating layer to allow environmental gases to reach through to the top side of the substrate. A porous electrode is printed on the top side of the insulating layer such that the electrode is formed in the opening in the insulating layer. The sensor also comprises at least one additional electrode. The electrolyte is then formed on top of the electrodes. A cap is formed over the electrodes and electrolyte. This arrangement may easily be produced using micromachining techniques.

Claims (27)

1. An electrochemical sensor comprising:

a monolithic substrate including a capillary formed therein, the capillary extending between a first major surface of the substrate and a second major surface of the substrate;

an insulating layer;

at least two electrodes, at least one the electrodes being a porous electrode;

an electrolyte;

wherein the at least one porous electrode is formed in an opening in the insulating layer aligned with the capillary and completely extending through the insulating layer and is formed in or adjacent the first major surface of the substrate in an area defined by the opening in the insulating layer, the electrolyte is formed as a layer over the electrodes and the insulating layer, the substrate has at least one hole formed therein, and the sensor is arranged such that, the porous electrode is exposed to the environment through the at least one hole in the substrate; and

wherein the at least one porous electrode is substantially circular, and the other of the at least two electrodes are partially-annular and formed around the periphery of the at least one porous electrode.

2. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1 , wherein the opening in the insulating layer is substantially circular and coaxial with the at least one porous electrode.

3. The electrochemical sensor of claim 2 , further comprising a ring-shaped conductive track, coaxial with and positioned beneath the at least one porous electrode.

4. The electrochemical sensor of claim 3 , further comprising at least one partially-annular conductive track, aligned with the other of the at least two electrodes.

6. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1 , wherein the partially-annular electrodes are semi-annular.

7. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes two sensors, each sensor having a respective working electrode and a respective counter electrode and sharing a common reference electrode.

8. The electrochemical sensor of claim 7 , wherein the working electrodes are semicircular, and the counter electrodes are quarter-annular.

9. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes two sensors, each sensor having a respective working electrode and sharing a common counter electrode and a common reference electrode.

10. The electrochemical sensor of claim 9 , wherein the working electrodes are semicircular, and the counter electrode is semi-annular.

11. The electrochemical sensor of claim 1 , wherein the sensor includes two sensors, each sensor having a respective working electrode and a respective counter electrode, and a respective reference electrode.

12. An electrochemical sensor comprising:

a monolithic substrate including a capillary formed therein, the capillary extending between a first major surface of the substrate and a second major surface of the substrate;

an insulating layer;

at least two electrodes, wherein at least one of the at least two electrodes being a porous electrode;

an electrolyte;

a ring-shaped conductive track, coaxial with and positioned beneath the at least one porous electrode; and
