Abstract

Disclosed is a liquid cooling module for computer servers, including: a pump, a fan, a heat exchanger, at least two ventilation grilles, an open central longitudinal space between the pump and the heat exchanger that is arranged to facilitate airflow therein from a grille of one short side wall to a grille of the other short side wall, this airflow being driven by the fan, a portion of secondary hydraulic circuit located in the liquid cooling module, for circulating a fluid coolant, including no bypass that would allow the pump to operate as a closed circuit and likely to clutter this open longitudinal space, a circuit control board positioned in the longitudinal extension of the open central longitudinal space so as to be directly swept by the airflow.

Claims (51)

1. A liquid cooling module for computer servers, the liquid cooling module comprising:

an outer housing having a length, a width, and a thickness such that the length is less than twice the width and the thickness is less than half the width, the outer housing having

four side walls, the side walls including two long walls in the lengthwise direction and two short walls in the widthwise direction,

a bottom, and

a cover; and

a plurality of components incorporated in the outer housing, the plurality of components comprising:

a pump oriented in the lengthwise direction of the outer housing and positioned along one of the long side walls,

a fan,

a heat exchanger oriented in the lengthwise direction of the outer housing and positioned along the other one of the long side walls

at least two ventilation grilles, where at least one ventilation grille is positioned in each short side wall,

an open central longitudinal space between the pump and the heat exchanger that is configured to facilitate airflow therein from an air intake ventilation grille of the at least two ventilation grilles of one of the short side walls to at least one air discharge ventilation grille of the at least two ventilation grilles of the other one of the short side walls, the airflow being driven by the fan,

a primary hydraulic circuit configured to supply the liquid cooling module with a fluid coolant,

a portion of a secondary hydraulic circuit located in the liquid cooling module, for circulating the fluid coolant, the portion of the secondary hydraulic circuit being without a bypass configured to allow the pump to operate as a closed circuit and to clutter the open central longitudinal space, and

a circuit control board positioned in a longitudinal extension of the open central longitudinal space to be directly swept by the airflow.

2. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

said circuit board comprises two separable portions including

a logic portion that is removable without disassembling the cooling module, and

a connection portion fixed to the cooling module without being separately removable, all connections of the liquid cooling module components leading to said circuit board being connected to said connection portion.

3. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the thickness of the outer housing is less than one third of the width of the outer housing.

4. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the pump oriented in the lengthwise direction of the outer housing and positioned along the long side wall is disposed right next to the long side wall.

5. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the heat exchanger oriented in the lengthwise direction of the outer housing and positioned along the other long side wall is arranged close to the other long side wall without any other member between the heat exchanger and the other long side wall except a pipe.

6. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

said circuit board is without a protective cover and is in direct contact with all the airflow coming from the open central longitudinal space.

7. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

said circuit board dissipates at least 5 W of heat.

8. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the length of the outer housing is between 60 and 90 cm, the width of the outer housing is between 50 and 70 cm, and the thickness of the outer housing is between 10 and 20 cm.

9. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the pump has sufficient capacity to provide a differential pressure between 2.5 and 3.5 bar at a flow rate between 50 and 100 liters per minute of fluid coolant.

10. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the cooling module dissipates at least 50 kW of heat.

11. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the pump comprises an air guide which channels air between the air intake ventilation grille in the cooling module and an inlet of the pump.

12. The cooling module according to claim 1 , further comprising a check valve located on a segment of the secondary hydraulic circuit located between an outlet of the pump and an inlet of the heat exchanger.

13. The cooling module according to claim 1 , further comprising a valve positioned on a portion of the primary hydraulic circuit located in the cooling module, the valve indirectly regulating the fluid coolant temperature in the first hydraulic circuit at an outlet from the heat exchanger.

14. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

one of the at least one air discharge ventilation grille discharges air from the cooling module and is located just downstream of said circuit board.

15. The cooling module according to claim 14 , wherein:

another one of the at least one air discharge ventilation grilles discharges air from the cooling module and is located just downstream of said valve.

16. The cooling module according to claim 15 , wherein:

a sum of surface areas of the air discharge ventilation grilles is equal to the surface area of the air intake ventilation grille.

17. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

the heat exchanger is an exchanger lying on a side.

18. The cooling module according to claim 1 , wherein:

an outer insulation layer surrounds the heat exchanger and at least one pipe of a portion of the primary hydraulic circuit located within the cooling module, to prevent condensation on their outer walls of the at least one pipe, even when the temperature of said outer walls is less than the dew point temperature of the cooling module.

19. The cooling module according to claim 1 , further comprising a liquid leak detector located in the bottom of the outer housing.
