Abstract

A detection system for measuring one or more conditions within a predetermined area including a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light. The at least one fiber optic cable defines a plurality of nodes arranged to measure the one or more conditions. A control system is operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light associated with the plurality of nodes is transmitted to the control system. The control system analyzes the scattered light from each of the plurality of nodes individually and the control system analyzes the scattered light from each of the plurality of nodes collectively to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions within the predetermined area.

Claims (25)

1. A detection system for measuring one or more conditions within a predetermined area comprising:

a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable defining a plurality of nodes arranged to measure the one or more conditions; and

a control system operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light associated with the plurality of nodes is transmitted to the control system, wherein the control system is operable to parse a signal indicative of the scattered light associated with the plurality of nodes into a plurality of signals, each of which is associated with a respective node of the plurality of nodes, the control system is further operable to analyzes the scattered light from each of the plurality of nodes individually and to analyzes the scattered light from each of the plurality of nodes collectively to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions within the predetermined area, wherein the scattered light from each of the plurality of nodes collectively is used to detect an event that is insufficient to initiate an alarm at any of the plurality of nodes individually.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the control system analyzes the scattered light to identify the scattered light associated with one of the plurality of nodes.

3. The system according to claim 2 , further comprising a plurality of light sensitive devices, wherein each of the plurality of light sensitive devices is operably coupled to the control unit and to one of the plurality of nodes.

4. The system according to claim 2 , further comprising a light sensitive device operably coupled to the control system and to each of the plurality of nodes of the at least one fiber optic cable.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the control system analyzes the scattered light from each of the plurality of nodes using Fourier transforms to determine the presence of the one or more conditions.

6. A method of measuring one or more conditions within a predetermined area comprising:

receiving scattered light from a plurality of nodes of a detection system at a light sensitive device, the plurality of nodes arranged to measure the one or more conditions;

communicating a signal corresponding to the scattered light associated with the plurality of nodes from the light sensitive device to a control unit;

evaluating the signal associated with the plurality of nodes collectively; and

determining whether the signal indicates at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions within the predetermined area, wherein the signal from each of the plurality of nodes collectively is used to detect an event that is insufficient to initiate an alarm at any of the plurality of nodes individually.

7. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising evaluating the signal from the plurality of nodes individually.

8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the control unit is configured to evaluate the signal from the plurality of nodes individually before evaluating the signal from the plurality of nodes collectively.

9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the control unit is configured to evaluate the signal from the plurality of nodes collectively before evaluating the signal from the plurality of nodes individually.

10. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the control unit is configured to evaluate the signal from the plurality of nodes individually and evaluate the signal from the plurality of nodes collectively simultaneously.

11. The method according to claim 7 , wherein evaluating the signal from each of the plurality of nodes individually further comprises parsing the signal into a plurality of signals and associating each of the plurality of signals with a corresponding node of the plurality of nodes.

12. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising applying a filter to each of the plurality of signals.

13. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising performing an analysis to determine one or more characteristics associated with the signal.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the one or more characteristics includes a peak height.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the one or more characteristics includes an area under a curve defined by each signal.

16. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising comparing the one or more characteristics of the signal to a threshold.

17. The method according to claim 6 , wherein evaluating the signal from the plurality of nodes collectively provides a time and spatial evolution of the one or more conditions.

18. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising: activating at least one of an alarm, suppression system, or other signal upon determining the presence of the one or more conditions.

19. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the one or more conditions includes smoke.
